Does Jesus Care? 1 Peter 5:6-7 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you.”

Does Jesus Care? # 466 In Hymns For Worship (Editors: R.J. Stevens & Dane Shepard) Written by: Frank Ellsworth Graeff (1860 - 1919) was born in a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. In 1894, he married Mary Lourene Mauger. Graeff loved children. Known for story telling / cheerfulness, and sense of humor. Yet, troubled by doubts and deep depressions. One source suggests he had a daughter (Nickel Notes: Hymn History).

Does Jesus Care? “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7). It was from this text that he composed the hymn, “Does Jesus Care?” copyrighted in 1901.

Does Jesus Care? Verse 1 “Does Jesus care when my heart is pained Too deeply for mirth or song, As the burdens press, And the cares distress, And the way grows weary and long?”

Does Jesus Care? Some burdens cause such pain and anguish, there doesn’t seem to be any relief. Jacob, believing his son Joseph had been killed by a beast. Genesis 37:34-35 David’s son Absalom conspired to take away the kingdom … David and his men lamented. 2 Samuel 15:30 When Absalom died David grieved. 2 Samuel 18:33; 19:4

Does Jesus Care? “Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee: He will never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psalms 55:22).

Does Jesus Care? Verse 2 “Does Jesus care when my way is dark With a nameless dread and fear? As the daylight fades Into deep night shades, Does He care enough to be near?”

Does Jesus Care? Ever longed for the breaking of day? God asked Job, “Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, And caused the dayspring to know its place?” Job 38:12 In times of sickness and death, God has promised He cares enough to be near. It is not a journey we have to take alone. David said, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me” Psalms 23:4

Does Jesus Care? Verse 3 “Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed To resist some temptation strong; When for my deep grief, There is no relief, Tho’ my tears flow all the night long?” (Not in our songbook.)

Does Jesus Care? Perhaps there is no grief greater than disappointment in ourselves. 1 Corinthians 10:13 Sometimes we fail to seek “the way of escape.” Peter. Luke 22:31-34 “Immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter … And he went out, and wept bitterly” Luke 22:60-62 David. 2 Samuel 11, 12; Psalms 51:3,16-17; cf. 2 Corinthians 7:10

Does Jesus Care? Verse 4 “Does Jesus care when I’ve said ‘good-by’ To the dearest on earth to me, And my sad heart aches Till it nearly breaks, Is it aught to Him? Does He see?”

Does Jesus Care? The loss of a loved one certainly causes deep pain. “Jesus wept.” John 11:33-35 Paul wrote to comfort those who had lost their loved ones “in Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

Does Jesus Care? Conclusion: All of us experience dark times in our lives; times of deep grief and sorrow. Jesus cares … Enough to leave the glory of heaven, to live in the flesh of man, and to die the cruel death of the cross for our sins. Enough to demonstrate the power of God in his resurrection; ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He serves as our high priest. Hebrews 4:15-16

Does Jesus Care? When dark clouds come our way and we dare ask the question, “Does Jesus Care?” Let us hear the resounding chorus … “O yes, He cares, I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief; … When the days are weary, The long night dreary, I know my Savior cares.”
