THIS MUST BE TURNED IN AT THE END OF CLASS FOR YOUR TEAM TO RECEIVE QUIZ SHOW CREDIT!!!

Question 1 – ONE POINT; TWO MINUTES Identify the characters that are not “real” 1. Don Quixote 2. Sancho Panza 3. Aldonza Lorenzo 4. Don Quixania 5. Dulcinea Del Toboso 6. Gines de Pasamonte

Answer 1. Don Quixote - fantasy 2. Sancho Panza – real world 3. Aldonza Lorenzo – real world 4. Don Quixania- real world 5. Dulcinea Del Toboso - fantasy 6. Gines de Pasamonte – real world

Question 2 – TWO POINTs; Three MINUTES Why does Don Quixote return home in Chapter 2?

Answer Don Quixote feels that he began his quest without proper preparation and feels as if he is missing something. He returns home to rest and possibly quit being a knight-errant.

Question 3 – two POINTs; three MINUTES Why is Sancho so agitated, upset, in Chapter 4, when Don Quixote charges the army of Alifanfaron of Zoprobana?

answer Sancho is upset because as the dust of the “two armies” settles, Sancho is able to see that it is not two armies but two flocks of sheep and their shepherds tending them, and that Don Quixote is killing these innocent sheep. (Teams just needed to identify the armies as sheep for points.)

Question 4 – two POINTs; three MINUTES Why does Sancho tie Rocinante’s legs in chapter 4?

Answer Sancho ties Rocinante’s legs together because he is afraid that Don Quixote is going to get hurt and leave him in the wilderness, and to keep Don Quixote from investigating the mysterious and “scary” sound of the fulling hammers. Sancho makes the excuse that a good wizard must have cast a spell on Rocinante to force Don Quixote to rest and investigate in the morning light. (Sancho is afraid is enough for the points)

Question 5 – two POINTs; three MINUTES Why does Don Quioxte feel that the galley slaves must be freed?

Answer Don Quixote feels that the galley slaves are no more guilty then anyone on Earth. He feels that they are innocent because of their circumstances. (Acceptable Answer: Don Quioxote felt that they were innocent, or Don Quixote was fooled by their words/excuses.)

Question 6 – three POINTs; Four MINUTES Why does Gines de Pasamonte attack Don Quixote? Why is Gines attacking Don Quixote IRONIC?

answer 1. Gines attacks Don Quioxte because Don Quioxte demands that Gines go to Toboso and tell Dulcinea of Don Quioxte’s deads. Gines wishes to run and hide in the hills from the guards. 2. It is ironic because Gines attacks and harms the man that believed he deserved mercy. Gines attacks the man that freed him. (Each question worth 2 points, so they may get only one correct for points.)

Question 7 – 2 POINTs; 3 MINUTES 1. What is stolen from Sancho in Chapter 6? 2. Who steals it from Sancho?

Answer 1. (one point) Dapple is stolen from Sancho. 2. (one point) Gines de Pasamonte steals Dapple from under Sancho.

Question 8 – 3 POINTs; 4 MINUTES How does meeting the “love sick shepherd” affect Don Quioxte in Chapter 6”

Answer Meeting the “love sick” shepherd causes Don Quixote to question how he has shown his love to Dulcinea, so he resolves to go crazy to prove his love.

Question 9 – 2 POINTs; 3 MINUTES What does Don Quioxte going insane cause Sancho Panza to do in Chapter 7, and whom does Sancho Panza devise this plan with?

answer (1 point)Sancho leaves for Toboso and happens upon two friends of Don Quixania’s: the Priest and the Barber. (1 point)They conspire to trick Don Quixania back home with a lie that “Dulcinea” has asked for “Don Quixote” to visit her in Toboso.

Question 10 – 3 POINTs; 4 MINUTES What is special or different about the incident at the in, where Don Quixote attacks the “giants”/wine skins?

answer It is the first time that Sancho Panza is able to “see” what Don Quixote de la Mancha “sees”. Sancho is able to see into the world of Don Quixote’s fantasy.

Question 11 – 2 POINTs; 3 MINUTES Why does Don Quixote believe he cannot see the Lady Dulcinea del Toboso in chapter 8?

answer Don Quioxte believes that his archenemy is enchanting him, so that he cannot see his lady love. If he, Don Quixote, cannot see the Lady Dulcinea, then his resolve, his strength, to fight in Dulcinea’s name will be weakened, and the Great Enchanter will win. (Sancho “helps” Don Quioxte with this excuse.)

Question 12 – 3 POINTs; 4 MINUTES Why MUST Don Quioxte believe that the Great Enchanter has “spelled” away the mysterious knight- errant and placed Sampson in his place, in Chapter 9?

answer Don Quixote must believe that his enemy has spelled his friend into the place of the knight-errant to steal Don Quixote’s victory, and thereby stealing his glory and proof of his love to the Lady Dulcinea. (A knight- errant must win to prove his love. And, a knight errant must suffer to prove his love.)
