Task 1: In your group consider what you know about: Nurture Restorative Practice Bullying Rewards and sanctions

The Principles of Nurture There are 6 Principles : Learning is understood developmentally. The environment offers a safe base. Nurture is important for wellbeing. Language is a vital means of communication. All behaviour is communication. Transitions are important in children’s lives. 1.Learning is understood developmentally : nurturing schools understand where where children and young people are developmentally. 2.The environment offers a safe base : there is a welcoming safe environment for all, inside and out. 3. Nurture is important for wellbeing : the development of self-esteem is balanced alongside the development of resilience and challenge. Language is a vital means of communication : all staff and children work to develop specific, positive expected behaviours, with support being given to develop these behaviours where necessary. Language used suits the developmental needs of each child and is consistent with Nurturing principles. All behaviour is communication : the overall approach in understanding non-verbal language is restorative. ( more details later) Transitions are important in children’s lives : big, small, in school and at home all can have an impact on children’s lives. Routines are in place to support each child and they are consulted about changes and supported to cope with them.

The Principles of Restorative Approaches “Restorative Practice is an approach to offending and inappropriate behaviour which puts repairing harm done to relationships and people over and above the need for assigning blame and dispensing punishment.”

The Principals of Restorative Approaches Restorative Approaches is to build community and to manage conflict by building and maintaining relationships and repairing the harm of wrong doing. It’s a Fair Process Individuals are most likely to trust and co-operate freely with systems – whether they themselves win or lose by those systems – when fair process is observed.

Bullying... Is Never acceptable What do we mean by Bullying? Bullying is both behaviour and impact Bullying is a breakdown in a relationship. Bullying is a behaviour that impacts on a person’s capacity to be in control of themselves. Behaviour can be changed. Bullying can happen face to face and on-line.
