WIKI By: Breanne Marsh

What is a wiki? Wiki is a collaborative web space where you can add or edit content that others have written. They are websites that anyone can edit, change, delete, or add to.

WIKI VIDEO

What is a wiki? Wikis can be used many ways in the classroom. They can be used for professional and team collaboration. Team members often share ideas with each other and others interested in the subject. This would be a great tool for us to post information, lessons, and get feedback from each other in an easy method. We could also post PowerPoint presentations, links, files, audio, etc.

What is a wiki? Wikis can also be used to create an online text for you to add to. Students can deliver content using Wikis for assignments. For example, if we are reading a story in class, students could answer questions about the material and then pose questions that they have. Then the teacher or students could respond to their questions and comment on their responses. This is a great way to integrate technology into a reading lesson and allow the students to be participants in their own learning.

Why should I use a wiki? COLLABORATIVE LEARNING Wikis are beneficial because students learn how to publish content and collaborate with each other. Students will learn from each other by editing each other’s papers and seeing the quality of other work. This comparison might cause the students to raise his or her expectations. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Students can develop critical thinking skills by critiquing other students’ information and learning how to defend their views when critiqued by other students

Why should I use a wiki? BUILD A CLASS COMMUNITY Working together in a collaborative process helps class members meet one another and build mutually beneficial scholarly relationships. STUDENT CENTERED WORKING Instead of one person leading the conversation, everyone has the ability to absorb and interpret that content. With wikis, students have the opportunity to provide much of the course content.

WHAT WIKI TO CHOOSE PBWiki PBWiki provides educators a 10MB wiki for an unlimited number of users for free. Key features include speedy setup, an audit trail of changes made to the wiki pages, RSS and email notification of wiki updates, IP whitelisting and blacklisting, and four roles to control access: Reader, Writer, Editor and Administrator. PikiWiki PikiWiki is the easiest wiki to learn and a great one for elementary-age kids. With PikiWiki, even novice computer users can create unique, expressive web pages by dragging and dropping pictures, video, or any other media into their browser right from their computer desktop.

What wiki to choose Wetpaint The Wetpaint platform rolls features from wikis, blogs, and forums into what they call "your own social websiteFor teachers, they have a special page about Wikis in Education and an Educator Ambassador to personally answer any questions you might have about using a wiki in the classroom. Wikispaces Wikipsaces is another wiki platform with a special offer for teachers. Since 2006, they have given away over 100,000 wikis for K-12 education, and have announced a goal of adding another 250,000 to that number.
