Chris Booth Sheffield 29th March 2006 MICE Target Status Chris Booth Sheffield 29th March 2006

University of Sheffield Major Milestones: Full assembly test at RAL – 24th – 28th April ISIS test (low power electronics) – June* ISIS test (full electronics) – October* (* exact date dependent on ISIS schedule) Chris Booth University of Sheffield

Work required for April test (1) Stator delivered by Manchester was not built to specs! Cannot use. Coil winding in progress. Body parts manufactured. Alternative potting scheme possible (improve heat flow). Glass cap & flange for readout planned. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

Work required for April test (2) Final dimensions of shaft clarified with Oxford. Major work on stator  lack of technical effort in Sheffield. Oxford agreed to assemble shuttle. Meeting in Oxford next week to finalise details (shaft, target, stop, magnets, alignment & readout vanes; cleaning). Steel tube – replace with Ti later. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

Work required for April test (3) Control hardware & software developed with no Hall magnet commutator – being debugged. Pseudo-current-controller built. Boards being crate-mounted for transport and reliability! Tests & monitoring. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

University of Sheffield Immediate milestones Electronics test (with existing prototype) 11th April Target assembly (stator, shaft, cap) 13th April To RAL 24th April Chris Booth University of Sheffield

University of Sheffield     April test objectives Test compatibility of Sheffield & RAL components. Demonstrate vacuum cleanliness. Demonstrate reliability. Measure performance, vibration etc at 8A. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

University of Sheffield Work required for June Shuttle with Ti shaft. Interface to ISIS control & timing. Improved analogue electronics. Optimised control. DAQ & monitoring software. Tests with 50 m cables. Decision on location of drive circuit. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

Future Plans (for October) Hardware changes based on experience. High current drive circuitry: Two days of meetings with Daresbury electronic engineers (DL, Sheffield). Basic design is sound. No commercial alternative. They will enhance drive to ?80 A? Power supply – capacitor bank and charger. June results will feed into design requirements. Chris Booth University of Sheffield
