Rules and Responsibilities developed by us for us!! Listen to whoever is talking. It may be a teacher or a classmate. Stay focused so that you can finish your work. Allow others to do the same. Walk quietly in the halls and in our classroom. Listen to and follow directions. Be kind, polite, and respectful. Always try your best. We have developed these rules together to help keep us safe and to allow us to learn. Rules also help us to show respect.

Snack Must be a healthy snack!!! Snack… not a meal No juice boxes Water bottles are fine, but MUST be labeled with your child’s name. This is a privilege that can be taken away. Bring a SPOON!!!! (Donations welcome)

Homework Homework is given each night. Will be responsible for copying from board. (On website..”just in case”….) Usually 2-3 subjects (Math, Reading, SS or Science) Please let me know if he/she has difficulty with the work so I can help. Write a note right on it.

Balanced Literacy Approach… During the 90-minute literacy block, students learn literacy through a workshop model called Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. Reader’s Workshop consists of five major components; read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and word work. Writer’s Workshop consists of independent writing, guided writing, shared writing, and conferring. During both workshops, teachers collect data on students individually and in guided reading groups. The collected data is analyzed to design specific teaching points that connect to the Common Core Standards, as well as to individual student literacy strengths and needs. Lastly, during both workshops students learn specific content in science and social studies as they learn specific content in science and social studies as they explore text through reading and writing.

What do we do all day? Literacy CoTeach: 60 minutes (Mrs. Mailman) Independent Reading … Guided Reading… Literacy Centers… Mini-Lessons..Word Work… Writer’s Workshop: 30+ minutes Narrative; Persuasive; Opinion; Non-Fiction; work on grammar and spelling within writing context. Math: 70+ minutes (Mrs Carozzo second half of year) Go Math Program Independent Practice…Problem Solving.. Math on the Spot… Science/SS: 35 minutes Alternates as schedule allows and as curriculum best lends itself..much of it is done within the literacy block

What will we learn this year? In addition to becoming more independent readers and writers, we will be learning so much more this year. Science: Soil, Earthworms, Ants, Butterflies, and other insects…. SS: Communities, Map Skills, Arctic and the animals that live there, Election (the process and responsibilities of citizens to vote) Famous People, and Current Events (Scholastic News) Math: Addition and Subtraction of 2 and 3 digit numbers, place value, problem solving, geometry, money and time, fractions, and the beginning of multiplication.

Grading System = Excellent = Proficient = Developing 1 = Improvement Needed Daily Classwork, Effort, and Participation are all included in a student’s report card grade. Also to be considered, is the amount of assistance it takes for a student to complete the assigned work and daily tasks. In order to get a 4…the student is completing work at a high level, consistently and without much assistance. Quizzes and Tests will usually have a grade written as a fraction (ex. 19/20) which is then converted into a 4,3,2 or 1. If a rubric is used it is attached so things are clear.
