Algebra 3: Purpose To review and elaborate on important topics covered in Algebra 1 and 2 To prepare students for the Texas State Initiative (TSI Exam) for college placement This will allow students to place directly into a college level math course and not developmental math To prepare students for military ASVAB exam To give students a basic mathematical skill set that will allow them to successfully complete any trade school a student might want to attend.

Algebra 3: Advantages Gives students who are not ready for Pre-Calculus a productive math option Students cover concepts that will be tested on many placement exams. (SAT, ACT, ASVAB, TSI) All topics will be retaught, just like this was the first time around. This is so we can correct deficiencies in your Algebraic skill set. Students who take the work load seriously will be College Algebra ready.

Algebra 3: Disadvantages This class is strictly review of already covered concepts in Algebra 1 and 2. Nothing covered will be new It is not given for college credit.

BOTTOM LINE Algebra is a topic that many popular post-grad programs will expect you to know. College: You will need to at least take and pass College Algebra Trade Schools: Will expect you to be able to solve and manipulate basic equations Military: ASVAB exam covers Algebra and this exam will determine the job you will qualify for. If you struggle in Algebra ……THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU!!!!!

Advanced Quantitative Reasoning What is AQR?

AQR It builds on and extends what you have learned and covers other mathematics topics not typically taught in high school. Summer Creek High School Math 1314 College Algebra

This is a college level course in algebra This is a college level course in algebra. Topics include zeros and graphs or polynomial functions; rational functions; inverse functions; exponential functions; logarithmic functions; linear systems of equations in two and three variables; nonlinear systems of equations; second-degree inequalities and systems; linear programming; matrices; determinants; solution of linear systems by matrices and determinants; sequences; series; binomial theorem; mathematical induction; permutations; combinations; probability; and applications of these topics (3 college credits).

Learning Outcomes: •Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions, including domain and range, operations, compositions, inverses and piecewise defined functions. •Recognize, graph and apply polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic and absolute value functions and solve related equations. •Apply graphing techniques. •Evaluate all roots of higher degree polynomial and rational functions. •Recognize, solve and apply systems of linear equations using matrices. •Solve absolute value, polynomial and rational inequalities.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn 3 credits that can be transferred to Lone Star College System. Students will also earn a credit that applies towards their graduation.

Pre-Calculus Are you ready for some Pre-Calculus?

Pre-calculus Goal Statement Pre-calculus is the preparation for Calculus. The study of the topics, concepts, and procedures of pre-calculus deepens students’ understanding of algebra and extends their ability to apply algebra concepts and procedures at higher conceptual levels, as a tool, and in the study of other subjects. The theory and applications of trigonometry and functions are developed in depth. New mathematical tools, such as vectors, matrices, and polar coordinates, are introduced, with an eye toward modeling and solving real-world problems

Foresight Pre-calculus is in many ways the gateway to college success in mathematics for most students and it is the first truly rigorous curriculum that even the best of Algebra 2 students experience their first struggles in math. The knowledge and skills described in these standards will prepare students for postsecondary training, including apprenticeships and introductory college courses. One of the ultimate goals is for students to acquire transferable knowledge. To accomplish this, learning needs to result in a deep understanding of content and mastery level of skills. The whole year involves rigorous instructional units of study with the end and not the immediate in mind .

Ultimate Goal The ultimate goal of a students taking pre-calculus is to take Calculus. Calculus is a powerful, useful, and versatile branch of mathematics. While the core ideas of calculus (derivatives and integrals) are not hard to understand, calculus is a demanding subject because it requires a broad and thorough background of algebra and functions. Study of the topics, concepts, and procedures of pre-calculus is very strongly recommended for all college-bound students.
