1 Assessment of Mathematics Requirement Stony Brook
11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

2 Assessment Program at Stony Brook
Taking a holistic approach & integrating faculty involvement assessment workshops developing department and program assessment developing assessment of general education program 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

3 Assessing the D.E.C.: Short-term Goals & Objectives
improve understanding of why students complete general education requirements develop online portfolio system identify director of diversified education curriculum establish annual workshops on general education 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

4 SUNY Mathematics Requirement
Students must show competence in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis, and quantitative reasoning. Satisfied by satisfying Stony Brook’s Basic Mathematics Competence 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

5 Mathematics Requirements at Stony Brook
Skill 1 Basic Mathematics Competence Students are able to formulate and solve basic mathematical problems, including arithmetic, basic algebra, geometry, using quantitative reasoning. D.E.C. Category C Mathematical & Statistical Reasoning Students develop and use university-level quantitative skills such as rational, exponential and logarithmic functions; statistical reasoning; hypothesis testing and modeling; and problem solving in a variety of applications. 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

6 Mathematics Instruction at Stony Brook
Freshman Mathematics Advisory Committee refining placement examination assessing student achievement integrating involvement of non-mathematics “user” departments addressing a variety of needs incorporating inquiry-based learning 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

7 Mathematics Placement Examination
required of all entering freshmen and all transfer students planning to take mathematics may be retaken once during the year; students often place one level higher after time for review 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

8 Mathematics Placement Examination
Levels 1 and 2 place students into developmental, non-degree courses Level 3 satisfies Basic Competence and places the student into university-level courses, such as introduction to calculus, symbolic logic, and statistics Higher levels place into calculus and advanced courses 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

9 Scoring of Placement Exam
exam is scored electronically score is placed on student’s record placement level is enforced for registration 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

10 Satisfying Skill 1 Basic Mathematics Competence
before entry by Regents score of 75 or higher SAT score of 530 or higher AP score of 3 or higher on calculus or statistics exam satisfying the SUNY requirement in mathematics level 3 on Stony Brook’s mathematics placement examination passing a non-degree course or transferring an equivalent or higher level course 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

11 Assessment of Student Outcomes
All students take placement exam on entry to Stony Brook. On completion of MAP 103, students re-take placement exam. Expectation: Students will place at level 3, demonstrating ability to formulate and solve basic mathematical problems, including arithmetic, basic algebra, geometry, using quantitative reasoning 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

12 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook
Sample Questions Suppose x and y are negative numbers. Then x2<y2 provided: x<y x>y x=y x<2y None of the above. If 6x - 1 = _1_ , then x= 2x x - 2 1 2 1/4 1/3 1/2 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

13 What we hope to discover
Preparatory courses develop skills in algebra, geometry, and quantitative reasoning Preparatory courses do properly prepare students for success in higher-level mathematics courses 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

14 D.E.C. Category C Mathematical & Statistical Reasoning
Multiple paths to develop university-level quantitative skills Calculus-based courses Statistics-based courses Logic and reasoning courses 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

15 Satisfying D.E.C. C Mathematics & Statistical Reasoning
passing with a C or higher a specified university-level mathematical and statistical reasoning course score of 4 or 5 on AP Calculus exam score of 6 on mathematics placement examination 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

16 Assessment of Student Outcomes
Quantitative reasoning skills from calculus-based courses, demonstrated in biology chemistry economics physics Quantitative reasoning skills from statistics-based courses, demonstrated in social sciences courses 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook

17 What we hope to discover
which paths better develop quantitative reasoning and problem solving skills which methods foster development of quantitative reasoning and problem solving skills what we can do to improve development of skills 11/28/2018 Mathematics Requirement/ Stony Brook
