Forestry and wood chains are essential components of sustainable development In terms of multifunctional uses of land In terms of economic and social impact In terms of industrial competition In terms of sustainable production In terms of environment: biodiversity, C capture In terms of international trade These aspects justified the opening of a new instrument to deal with this integrative, innovative challenge and to contribute to enhance sustainable development strategy
The contributions of the Forestry IP are not isolated: The sector needs to produce and use environmental technologies The relationships with other land-uses (agriculture, urban, coastal zones,…) need to be understood and conflicts resolved The insertion and contribution to the economy has to be taken into account Externalities cannot be neglected and need to be internalized Trade-off between multiple functions need to be included

The role of forestry and wood chains in the different calls and in FP7
Global-1 Multifunctional forestry and wood chains topic was open in the 1st call One proposal passed all thresholds but was not funded
SSAs Global-2 InnovaWood The main aim is to match industry needs and research capabilities through an integrated strategy for innovation in the European forestry- wood chain.
Global-3 Multifunctional forestry and wood chains was reopened for new instruments. The text included forestry management Six proposals were presented at this first stage involving 158 European and international institutions Integrated forest fire risk management, covering hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment (including wildland-urban interface) Three proposals were presented at this first stage involving 109 European and international institutions Several proposals for SSAs
Global-4 Tools for impact assessment of land use policies in developing countries might be open
Environmental research in FP 7 New instruments are proposed Under collaborative research, Environment and Climate Change might be a thematic priority Several openings for tropical forest as part of broader subjects: Environmental technologies Management of natural resources and services Understanding and predicting climate change Implementation of Sustainable Development strategy, including land use Global earth observation
New Instrument Technology Platform “European Technology Platforms will provide a means to foster effective public-private partnerships involving, as appropriate, public research, industry, financial institutions, users, regulatory authorities and policy-makers.” 22 proposals launched Innovative and sustainable use of forest resources A Technology Platform initiative by the European Forest-based Sector (now preparing the vision paper and the public launch event)
