ΤΗΕ GREEK EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

The Greek educational system is composed by three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary; an additional post-secondary level provides vocational training.

Primary education Primary education is consisted of kindergarten which lasts one or two years(ages 4 to 5) and primary school that lasts six years (ages 6 to 12).

Gymnasio Secondary education includes two stages: Gymnasio (translated as Junior High School), a compulsory three-year school, after which students can attend Lykeion (an academically-oriented High School) or Vocational training.

University Higher Tertiary education is provided by Universities and Polytechnics, Technological Educational Institutes (T.E.I., 1983 ~ present) and Academies which provide mainly the military and the clerical education.

University Undergraduate studies typically last 4 years (5 in polytechnics and some technical/art schools and 6 in medical schools), postgraduate studies (Master level) lasting from 1 to 2 years and doctorates (PhD level) lasting from 3 to 6 years. All education levels are under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. Private schools are also included.

There is also a number of private tutors (Greek: φροντιστήριο) providing foreign language tuition, supplementary lessons for weak students or even exam preparation courses for the high-leveled Panhellenic national exams. There are also private schools, colleges and universities.

The existing situation leads to the fact that Greek students do not have enough spare time as they spend a lot of time into either schools or private courses and studying at home. At least, they improve their knowledge in maths, physics, languages and other subjects.

Lykeio of Iasmos Lykeio Iasmou is state secondary school situated in the village of Iasmos in Thrace, Greece. We have approximately 106 students, from 16-18 years old.

Lykeio of Iasmos Lykeio Iasmou is a friendly place for both staff (15 teaching staff and 2 support staff) and pupils. There is a number of different subjects (greek language, English language, history, maths, science, informatics, etc.) and studies are mainly focused on preparing students for university studies.

Lykeio of Iasmos In our school the senior high school has three grades and the target group of its students is 16 to 18. In the second grade, students have to choose and follow one of the three direction given, the technological, the direction for maths and physics or theoretical one. Before finishing school they take the National Writing Exams and according to the total points gathered, the can succeed in entering to Greek Universities.

Lykeio of Iasmos Our school combines different cultures and customs (Cristian and Islamic) and we accept the different religions, the different way of thinking and living. We also do and take part in many projects.
