Navigating the Winds of Change We cannot change the direction of the wind……but we can always adjust our sails

AEL letter 04-16 (September 2016) Next Steps

Addressing the Changes Longer course (Course Duration) How long? 90 days Six months One year Regimented number of hours?

Addressing the Changes Higher level of content mastery in technical area Does the new standard require a specific number of hours for technical, workforce and contextualized? More rigor What is the definition of rigor in this stance?

Recruiting Focus Flipped Typical New Limited English speaking student. Under advanced level Has improved English skills to advanced or bridge level Must practice reading, writing, speaking, listening for proficiencies Might be operating a business now, but could be more successful with ability to communicate Might be somewhat interested in the technical topic area Seeking educational information to advance skills in the world of business

The New Eligible Student Interested in the training area Has need and is willing to attend contextualized AEL that supports training Interested in Digital Literacy Takes baseline and progress assessment Agrees to commit to and attend the entire program

The New Plan – Small Business Curriculum Grayson College offers through their Business Management degree several options: Occupational Skills Awards Level 1 Certificates Use faculty credentialed in workforce training (i.e—business management)

Small Business Course Track Single site for instruction Could be a hybrid option with both classroom and online learning Would be recruiting students as a cohort Core faculty with some guest speakers
