Year 6 SATs Meeting for Parents 28th February 2017

What are KS2 SATs? Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) All children have to be tested before they go to secondary school Provide assessment information for secondary schools Purpose – assess children against Age- Related Expectations

What information do secondary schools want? SATs results Teacher assessments Secondary schools will often carry out their own tests within the Autumn Term

What is teacher assessment? Teacher assessment draws together everything the teachers know about a child, including observations, marked work and school assessments. Teacher assessment is not a ‘snapshot’ like tests and is therefore more reliable. There can be a difference between teacher assessment results and test scores. Teacher assessment only, is used for children who work below the level of the test (children who don’t do the SATs) and also for writing.

Assessment without levels A pupil who achieves the national standard will have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests “The old national curriculum levels are not relevant to the new national curriculum. However, in order to provide schools with some indication of the new standards, we have tried to indicate equivalence in a broad sense. At KS1 the national standard will roughly equate to an old level 2b. At KS2 this will roughly equate to an old level 4b. Otherwise levels and scaled scores will not be comparable.”

How is SATs week organised? A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days/sessions tests must be administered. All children must sit the tests at the same time. Test papers can only be opened 1 hour before the tests begin, only under particular circumstances. Tests are completed in designated areas, with any displays that may help covered over.

SATs Timetable Monday 8th May Tuesday 9th May Wednesday 10th May Thursday 11th May English Reading test English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Mathematics Paper 1: Arithmetic Paper 2: Reasoning Mathematics Paper 3: Reasoning

Grammar Test Children will be tested on their grammar, punctuation and spelling knowledge. They need to know the technical vocabulary associated with word classes and sentence composition However, they can ask for reading support

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

Reading 1 hour to read the reading booklet and answer questions on 3 different texts of increasing difficulty. Children are expected to refer to the reading booklet during this time There are a variety of different questions to be answered in different ways Children cannot have any adult help in this test

Reading test

Two written mathematical reasoning papers Mathematics Mathematics SATs consist of: An arithmetic test. There is no longer a mental arithmetic test However, the arithmetic test will contain 36 questions to be completed in 30 mins so speed is of the essence. Two written mathematical reasoning papers Test A and Test B Calculators or tracing paper are not permitted.

Mathematics Some questions are worth one mark and therefore accuracy is important. Other questions are worth two marks and even if the answer is wrong, a mark may be given for correct method. (see school’s calculations policy) Teachers may read questions in both written papers to pupils if asked.

Paper 1: Arithmetic

Paper 2 & 3: Reasoning

Preparations Children have worked hard all year to prepare for the tests. Children have practised tests in the classroom under test conditions. They are given feedback each time with development points Children are developing the confidence to apply their knowledge and use strategies to complete the tests Children have been provided with revision books to practise their skills at home, in preparation for lessons.

How can parents help? The best help is interest taken in what they are learning. Encouraging your child to revise...especially in areas they are less confident in. Supporting revision books and spellings at home. Getting a good sleep on a school night and a breakfast in the morning.

Finally… Please feel free to look through the example tests and ask any questions.
