Making use of Energy lesson 8 3.3 g how data can be obtained and used to investigate the cost of using a variety of energy sources for heating and transport

Hydrogen fuel – Honda Clarity FCX How does the hydrogen fuel cell work? What are the waste product made? Where will we get hydrogen from What renewable sources of energy can be used to power electrolysis of water? How much more efficient is the Honda than a traditional petrol powered vehicle? How much more efficient is the Honda than a petrol/ electric hybrid powered vehicle?

Comparison of cars   Petrol Car Hydrogen car Cost to buy Emissions Cost to fill tank Top speed Distance travelled per tank Ease of finding fuel Fuel cost per mile There are no grants to help purchase the car. Is the hydrogen powered car a viable alternative to petrol cars?

Solar Water heating System information card Fuel Displaced Saving per year Carbon dioxide saving per year Gas £65 370kg Electricity £75 500kg Oil 350kg Coal £80 610kg It costs between £3000 and £5000 to install a solar powered water heating system. The maintenance costs are very low. The system have a 5-10 year warranty and need very little maintenance. You do need to have the panels checked every 5 years by a qualified engineer. This data covers the hot water requirements for 3 bed house with a 3.6m2 panel. The panel are about 14% efficient. A coal powered fire station is 36% efficient.

Is installing a solar panel heating system cost effective? If the solar water system costs £3600 to install using a registered engineer. Why are the solar panel pipes painted dull black? If a coal powered station is being replaced. Calculate the payback time. What factors will affect how much energy is produced by the solar cell. How much carbon dioxide has been saved during this time? You can apply for a grant of £1500 to help with cost of installation. By how much does this reduce the payback time. Is installing a solar powered heating system efficient? Would you install a solar panel heating system. Give reasons.
