Is it worth it? Asbestos has been around for 2000 years. Named by the Ancient Greeks meaning “inextinguishable”. Became popular during the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800’s. Used for thermal insulation, fire proofing, acoustic insulation, roofing, flooring and in a variety of other building materials. In 1917 & 1918, it was observed that asbestos workers were dying unnaturally young. The first diagnosis of asbestosis was made in 1924. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) banned almost all products that contained asbestos in 1989. More than 107,000 people world wide die each year from asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

National cancer institute Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy. A non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, which can be absorbed by tissues closest to where the phone is held. The amount of radiofrequency energy a cell phone user is exposed to depends on the technology of the phone, the distance between the phone’s antenna and the user, the extent and type of use, and the user’s distance from cell phone towers. Studies thus far have not shown a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck.

World health organization Lists mobile phone use in the same “carcinogenic hazard” as lead, engine exhaust, and chloroform. A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, decided to categorize personal exposure as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”. Evidence was found of an increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users. Children’s skulls and scalps are thinner, so the radiation can penetrate deeper into the brain. Cell phones that are moving, or in an area with a weak signal, have to work harder, giving off more radiation. A study in 2010 showed participants who used a cell phone for 10 years or more had doubled the rate of brain glioma, a type of tumor.

Highest radiation levels For a phone to pass FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations, the SAR (Special Absorption Rate) cannot be higher than 1.6 watts per kilogram. Protective measures Limit your time on the phone. Reduce use to the most necessary calls. Keep calls short and to the point. Research has shown that a short, two-minute call can alter the natural electrical activity of the brain up to one hour. Text when you can. When texting will suffice, send one instead of dialing. Do not text and drive. Use a headset or speaker. DO NOT put the phone by your body or on your waist during use. Men who wear their cell phones near their waste could see their sperm count reduced by as much as one-third.

Protective measures cont. Avoid using in metal boxes. Using your phone in an elevator or your car cuts the signal strength and forces the phone to use more power to connect. The signal bar. If your cell signal is down, wait to use your phone. Less signal means more power is required for use. Support your body with nutrition.
