A government ruled by a King, Queen, Emperor or Empress. Monarchy A government ruled by a King, Queen, Emperor or Empress.

Dictatorship A country ruled by a single leader. The leader has not been elected and may use force to keep control.

Autocracy A Government where by a single person has unlimited power; despotism (domination through threat of punishment and violence).

Communism The government owns property such as businesses and farms and provides its people with healthcare, education and welfare.

A situation where there is no government. Anarchy A situation where there is no government.

Revolutionary The ruling group that forms when a government is overthrown by force of the people.

Oligarchy A government in which a few people such as a dominant clan or clique have power.

Totalitarian A country with only one political party, where people are forced to do what the government tell them and may also be prevented from leaving the country.

Combination Government Democracy & Monarchy

Constitutional Monarchy Monarch as head of state-one who represents the people as a traditional symbol of the country AND Elected officials as head of government-those who make laws and official decisions for the country

Theocracy When a nation recognises a God or a Deity as their ruler and the King or leader as God’s representative.

Republic A country that has no Monarch, but is headed by an elected President or official.

Democracy This form of government is elected by the people and everyone is eligible to vote.

What is Democracy? Dêmos, which means people. Key points; We have a system of government called democracy. It comes from the Greek words; Dêmos, which means people. Krátos which means rule or strength. Democracy means ‘rule by the people’. The idea of democracy was developed in Greece in about 507BC.
