Le Passé composé avec Être Verbes: pages 458 & 460

The passé composé is usually formed using avoir + past participle: J’ai donné une fête hier soir. Nous avons quitté la maison. Pierre a écrit une lettre.

Dr. & Mrs. Vandertramp!!! However, certain verbs are conjugated with être in the passé composé rather than avoir! How do you know when to use être? Dr. & Mrs. Vandertramp!!! Often these verbs express motion to or from a location.

Here are the rules of agreement: When conjugating with être in the passé composé, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject. Here are the rules of agreement: Masculine: -- Feminine: add –e Masc. Plural: add –s Fem. Plural: add –es

For example: Il est sorti. Elle est sortie. Ils sont sortis. Elles sont sorties.

Remember that in the negative, the ne…pas surrounds the helping verb. Nous ne sommes pas arrivés. Tu n’es pas descendu(e). Vous n’êtes pas sortis.
