The Healthy Schools Act: Timeline 2001: AB 2260 Right-to-know law, K-12 public schools, public child care centers 2006: AB 405 Prohibited certain pesticides at schools 2007: AB 2865 Added PRIVATE CHILD CARE CENTERS (except family day care homes) 2015: SB 1405 NEW • IPM plan, required IPM training, schools report pesticide use

WHAT IS IPM? Pest management strategy Long-term prevention of pests Least hazardous pesticide used only as needed Long-term prevention of pests Combination of techniques Health and environment approach

HSA Requirements for Schools Starting January 1, 2015 Develop IPM plan and post on school district website Submit pesticide use reports to DPR (first due by Jan. 30, 2016) Starting July 1, 2016 Receive annual training in IPM & safe pesticide use around children

HSA Training Requirements for Schools Food and Agricultural Code 13186.5. (a) Commencing July 1, 2016 any person, including, but not necessarily limited to, a schoolsite or district employee, who in the course of his or her work, intends to apply a pesticides at a schoolsite subject to this article, shall annually complete a training course provided by the department or an agent authorized by the department.

HSA Training Must cover: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Be a minimum of one hour long Have a final exam of at least ten questions Each attendee must receive a certificate

HSA Training Required Subjects 3 of 3 Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Components of an IPM program Real-world maintenance practices Why you should use IPM at schools and child care centers Common schoolsite pest problems IPM strategies for specific pests (such as ants, bees/wasps, cockroaches, gophers, mice/rats, spiders, and weeds)

We are too busy… so what? (Food and Agricultural code, section 12996) Any violation of any provision relating to pesticides may result in a misdemeanor with punishments by fine of not less than $500, up to $50,000 and imprisonment of up to one year in state prison or a combination of both fine and imprisonment.

Included in the kit: DVD version of the online course and master copies of materials Sign-in sheet Final quiz Certificates of completion Other relevant resources -Only one kit request per district -Return sign-in sheets and completed quizzes by mail to DPR -Keep Certificates of Completion on file at the district office To request a Basic training kit, please email school-ipm@cdpr.ca.gov Send your name, title, district name, and mailing address.
