Sophomore Q1 Week 6

My Opinion Monday: Sept 12th What is your opinion on illegal immigration? Should we stop it? Why or why not? How can illegal immigration be an issue of national security? What, if any, restrictions should we put on immigration? What are your thoughts on illegal immigrants already living in America? (Kick them out? Let them stay? Etc.)

Introductions: Make sure you have revised your introduction to include: Interesting hook Bridge explaining the hook and giving the background of the quote Clear and specific hook that gives specific reasons: EX. We live in a country that’s foundation is based on freedom, so even though Franklin’s words are hundreds of years old, they still ring true. We need to restrict our government’s powers by eliminating Stop and Frisk laws, giving rights to gun holders, and banning immigration laws. EX: Franklin’s quote is outdated in today’s world and we need more security to protect ourselves against terrorism, mass shootings, and the threat of illegal immigration.

Class Reading: The Giver chapter 10 Questions of the Day: Use complete sentences. Use evidence. 1) How does the author characterize the old Receiver of Memory? Include both direct and indirect characterization.

Class Reading: The Giver chapter 11 Questions of the Day: Use complete sentences. Use evidence. 1) Explain the first memory Jonas receives. What does this reveal about their community? What is the weather like?

Class Reading: The Giver chapter 13 Questions of the Day: Use complete sentences. 1) How is being the receiver of memory changing Jonas? Use evidence.

Tuesday

Text Says Tuesday: Using evidence from your homework article, answer the following question: Should we allow immigration? Hint: Biddle = supports immigration Scarborough = against immigration Remember to: Introduce the quote with the speaker and where it is coming from Cite the quote using quotation marks and (paragraph number) Explain the quote in 1-2 sentences

Finding Evidence: In order to get full points, you need to use three different sources. Pick which articles support your ideas. Find 3-5 quotes to use. Write quotes on index cards. Remember, quotes should be concise and impactful. On the back of the quote card, cite the needed information from each article to be sure to have your MLA citation info. You need: article title, author, source (newspaper/website title), date published

Wednesday

Wordy Wednesday: September 14th Embed: Dictionary definition: fix (an object) firmly and deeply in a surrounding mass. English Definition: introduce your quote by citing speaker, title, explanation EX. In The Giver, Lois Lowry shows Jonas’ progression and growing frustration with his society through quotes that reveal his emotion like, “‘But I want them!’ Jonas said angrily. ‘It isn’t fair that nothing has color’” (97). Elaborate: Dictionary Definition: develop or present (a theory, policy, or system) in detail. English class context: Add details/explanations after a quote to show the reader the connection between your ideas and the quote. EX. In The Giver, Lois Lowry shows Jonas’ progression and growing frustration with his society through quotes that reveal his emotion like, “‘But I want them!’ Jonas said angrily. ‘It isn’t fair that nothing has color’” (97). Through this display of anger, Lowry is beginning to characterize Jonas as a rebel who dislikes living in such a confined society.

Drop Everything and Read: 1) Silent Reading 2) Reading conferences 3) Exit Slip: How does the author characterize the protagonist/antagonist? Pick one quote to embed and elaborate.
