Topics for Today Hot Weather Hydration Sunglasses Sunscreen Summer Shoes

But First … Who Dat? Dave Badal

The 101 Critical Days of Summer Memorial Day to Labor Day

The Last Day of School It’s still on my Top 10 List of “Best Days Ever”

Swimming Pool You’re still alive… So keep on doing what you’ve been doing.

We live in Texas The HEAT and the HUMIDITY can be hazardous Stay out of the sun (especially 1000 – 1400) Drink extra water

HYDRATE! (a “glass” is 8 ounces) Drink at least eight glasses per day (that’s ½ gallon a day). Take additional precautions when exercising or working outdoors. During exercise (work), you should consume 1 glass of water every 20 minutes, even if you don't feel thirsty.

Don’t work in the sun between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM If you are forced to work in the sun during these hours: Once every 20 minutes …. Sit in the shade Drink a glass of water

2 Quarts Water ¼ Cup Lemon Juice ½ teaspoon Salt Because heat-related illness also can result from salt depletion, it may be advisable to substitute an electrolyte-rich sports drink for water. Home-Made Electrolyte-Rich Sports Drink (This makes ½ Gallon) 2 Quarts Water ¼ Cup Lemon Juice ½ teaspoon Salt

If you have hot dry skin (no sweating) Call 911 Respect the Heat…it can kill you (literally). If you have hot dry skin (no sweating) Call 911 If you even think you are experiencing Heat Related Illness Get out of the sun and drink water Do whatever it takes to reduce your body temperature

Don’t forget your buddies this summer. They need to stay cool (and hydrated) too.

Wear sunglasses. Not Only Cool … but beneficial too! You MUST wear shades! Sun exposure damages the eyes as well as the skin. Wear sunglasses. Purchase sunglasses with labels ensuring that they provide 100% UV protection.

Not Real Exciting BUT … Consider the long term consequences

UVB … B = Burn UVA … A = Aging SUNSCREEN … Put it on Remember, the two important UV rays UVB … B = Burn UVA … A = Aging UVB rays cause the immediate change in skin color (long term damage) Depending on the degree of exposure, we either get a tan or a burn.   UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin (wrinkles, age spots). These rays are capable of reaching the skin through glass and clouds. UVA are the rays that can be found in tanning beds.

SUNSCREEN … Put it on … even when it’s cloudy Grey clouds allow 32% of the sun’s rays to shine through. White, fluffy clouds allow 89% of the rays through!

A standard white t-shirt has an SPF of about 7 SUNSCREEN … Put it on … Even with a T-Shirt on A standard white t-shirt has an SPF of about 7 If it's wet, the SPF can go down as low as 3

So … What about UVA? SUNSCREEN … Broad Spectrum … Put it on Use “Broad Spectrum” Sunscreen (UVA and UVB) … SPF 30 SPF 30 sunscreens filter out 97% of UVB SPF 50 filters 98% of UVB SPF 100 filters 99% of UVB So … What about UVA? FDA rules effective from summer 2012 defines the phrase "broad spectrum" as providing UVA protection proportional to the UVB protection.

Reapply Sunscreen at least every 2 Hours. SUNSCREEN … Put it on … REPEATEDLY Reapply Sunscreen at least every 2 Hours. every 30 minutes if you are swimming every 90 minutes if you are sweating Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (or higher)

The Podiatrists Cash Generator Summer Shoes … Cheap Flip Flops The Podiatrists Cash Generator

Give some thought to what you put on your feet. The human foot is a strong and complex mechanical structure containing 26 bones, 33 joints (20 of which are actively articulated), and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments. In order to keep these pieces and parts working in reasonable harmony … Give some thought to what you put on your feet.

Flip Flops (the cheap ones) They do more harm than good when worn for long periods of time. Most of us don’t have a “Normal” foot … we have: Flexible Flat Foot Rigid High-Arch Foot Both of these require Arch Support, which cheap flip flops DON’T have.

Can you see the difference?

Look for: Arch Support Heel Support Soft Toe Thong Shock Absorbing materials

You will pay more for the “better” flip flops (about $20 more per pair). But, as you get older, you will realize that the additional expense was money well spent. If you give your feet proper arch support when you are young, there is less chance that you will have “feet problems” when you are older. You will also avoid injury right now.

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

Memorial Day … May 30th is for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Take time to remember those that died fighting for our freedom. Have a safe Memorial Day. Take time to remember those that died fighting for our freedom. Did you sign the roster? I’ll see you next month.
