Comments on the February 19-20 DOE Review Mark Palmer Fermilab 2/21/2014 DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)

Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014) What Was Presented Review Site: https://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceOtherViews.py?view=standard&confId=8013 Access Code: muons14 Opening Plenary Session: Introduction/Overview MASS IBS Process R&D Status Parallel Sessions Area System Summaries (PD, FE, Acceleration, Collider, MDI, NF) and Physics (nuSTORM, NuMAX, Collider) R&D (RF, Magnets, Targetry, MICE) Program Management (PMP, PEP, Budget, Feasibility Assessment Issues and Criteria) Closing Plenary Cooling Overview Presentation on the HCC and VCC 6D cooling proposals February xx, 2014 Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)

Findings, Comments and Recommendations I Based on my notes (do not yet have committee documents) Others who took notes can comment as well Specifically Noted: Significant progress on MICE construction and RF in B-field The elements of our research program are approved MASS and IBS are examples of the MAP reorganization and development of a strategic plan MAP management is encouraged to leverage the newly expanded Institutional Board February xx, 2014 Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)

Findings, Comments and Recommendations II Last 2 years of effort have produced a rational plan for the Feasibility Assessment Management changes in MICE program have strengthened the effort MAP Program Management Plan (PMP) and Program Execution Plan (PEP) are reasonable MAP has presented a prioritized list of feasibility items to focus on Presented a long-term vision for how the Fermilab campus could be built out with physics at each stage MASS has provided critical focus Congratulated on MICE Spectrometer Solenoid Progress Prior recommendations (from August 2012 Review) 16 adequately addressed 5 to be addressed as part of the IBS process February xx, 2014 Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)

Findings, Comments and Recommendations III MASS process endorsed (and encouraged) MAP is encouraged to develop a path to demonstrating 6D cooling with beam [Missed a comment here on the staged NF] More US agency support of the MICE program at NSF is critical Systems Engineer is needed for program-wide support Realistic and integrated US and UK MICE schedule is a major accomplishment. The Partial Return Yoke magnetic shielding effort was carried out as a unified team. MAP should continue to improve the presentation of its integrated plan The laboratory should more clearly present how MAP aligns with the Fermilab plan MAP should create an Assumptions Document MAP should maintain regular meetings with its Institutional Board (in particular to help leverage key program efforts) February xx, 2014 Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)

Findings, Comments and Recommendations IV Engage a systems engineer by the end of FY14 Present an Assumptions Document by July 31, 2014 ie, what assumptions are inherent in the MAP plan for institutional and funding agency support Develop and maintain a cryogenic heat load inventory by July 31, 2014 February xx, 2014 Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)

Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014) Summary All in all, a successful conclusion to this review Thanks to all who presented and attended! February xx, 2014 Presenter’s Name | DOE Review of MAP (FNAL, February 19-20, 2014)
