International Design Study for a Neutrino Factory in the 5 Year Plan A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2010 1A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

IDS-NF RDF  One additional task will be on Neutrino Detector Magnetization Studies u Separate Detector R&D Proposal  The primary goals of the IDS-NF are to: u Deliver a Reference Design Report for the NF accelerator complex and its neutrino detectors by 2013 u Estimate the cost of the facility at the +50–75% uncertainty level u Identify possible staging scenarios s Now including Low-Energy NF u Consider possible sites for the accelerator complex and neutrino detectors, taking into account, where appropriate, the existence of suitable infrastructure 2A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

US Areas of Participation  Proton driver u Site Specific – ie, Project X (or whatever it is eventually called).  Targetry and target stations  Pion capture and muon phase rotation  Ionization cooling  Accelerator systems  Site-specific (FNAL) underground engineering issues for the muon storage rings  Magnetization concepts for neutrino detectors  Overall coordination of effort for the low-energy NF option 3A. 5 Acceleration Systems  Aligned with, but not identical, to MC u Main U.S. contribution will be to prepare an engineering design foundation for the acceleration systems including the following aspects: s Definition and design of beam lines or lattices s Development of full component lists and detailed specifications for each system s Studies of beam loading in FFAGs Both Baseline (25 Gev) and LE (4-5 GeV) Options 5A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

SCRF Cryo-modules  201-MHz superconducting cavities are utilized in the acceleration  Initial studies will use 500 MHz model cavities u Cornell Proposal  ALD Processing u What Jim described on Thursday 6A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

IDS-NF Effort/resources  For the most part, the IDS-NF work will mirror the FE activities for the MC  Deliverable: RDR 7A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

IDS-NF Effort/Resources II  What is not covered u Underground engineering u TASD R&D u Large Magnetic Volume R&D  Underground engineering effort may be shared with LBNE where there is synergy u All underground structures (tunnels, caverns, and intersections) will be of “modest span” (between 2 and 4 m in width). u At least some of these underground facilities will be aligned on steep gradients, at depths up to 0.5 km below grade u A design brief can be generated in-house at Fermilab, with support from the MAP and laboratory ES&H, and accomplished in a six-month period. s The brief will be relatively simple, consisting of an initial set of single-line drawings showing the underground space envelopes and a list of key as- built requirements consistent with the technical needs and conventional infrastructure.  TASD and Large Magnetic Volume R&D is currently orphaned u Will likely require a separate proposal u Will be difficult to fund in current environment u Engineering design effort on LMV may be available with Fermilab TD 8A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

Side Note: MUTAC Recommendation  IDS, Europe, Japan, and other international issues u The Collaboration should continue to develop stronger ties with the international community, as it plans to do, and particular attention should be paid to the exploration of further connections with Japanese counterparts.  Well, u This will be difficult, to say the least s Particularly w/r to the IDS-NF and Japan s With the MC in general  However, at this point in time, the IDS-NF is our best vehicle for obtaining international participation in the MC 9A. Bross NFMCC CM January 15, 2009

Extension to 5 Year Work Plan  My Opinion: u During the 5 Year R&D study, develop a “Shovel (is)-Ready” design for the (4MW) target station and muon collection system s Muon Collider Test Facility Concept  Advantages u Giant step towards muon facility s We need to demonstrate 10 5-6 increase in muon production rate s Could mesh well with Project X s Experts in US (ORNL) are up to the job s As we have recently seen, shovel-ready projects can get funded if you are in the right place at the right time 10A.
