Leadership and Physical Therapy The 7 Habits of Highly Effective people Stephen R Covey Transitions Dependence Independence Interdependence Book moves readers through phases that we can directly relate to the transition of PT school to post graduate practice and leadership Dependence – Relying on others Independence – make our own decisions and take care of ourselves Interdependence – work together to achieve things that cannot be achieved independently

Habits Being Proactive Begin with the end in mind Put first things first Proactive – taking the bull by the horns mentality – using resourcefulness to solve problems. Change life through things you can influence rather than external forces Begin with the end in mind – where do you want to be, what do you want to end up doing? First things first – ID key roles and make time for them. Make a plan and stick to your plan

Habits continued Think Win/Win Seek first to understand, then to be understood Synergize Sharpen the saw W/W – Find relationships that are mutually agreeable and seek them out. Don’t reward win/lose relationships Understand – effective listening, put yourself in the other persons perspective listening for feeling and meaning Synergize – listen, leverage differences to make the whole greater than individual Saw – continue to grow, continue to refine your skills

Putting it all together How do the habits relate to: Residency? Board certifications? Professional and personal leadership?
