REHEARSAL SENSORY MEMORY SHORT TERM MEMORY STM FORGETTING FORGETTING

MSM Questions Statement True or False It shows how information is passed from the STM to the LTM There is a medium term memory store There is a sensory memory store Rehearsal is optional It was devised by Atkinson & Shiffrin There is only one part to the STM

MSM Questions T F Statement True or False It shows how information is passed from the STM to the LTM T There is a medium term memory store F There is a sensory memory store Rehearsal is optional It was devised by Atkinson & Shiffrin There is only one part to the STM

Activity… 1) Look at the multi-store model of memory diagram and complete the gaps in the description of the model. Attention: Information is transferred from one store to another. You pay attention to pass information from the sensory store to the STM Rehearsal: Is needed to pass information from STM to LTM Forgetting: Memory traces in STM are fragile and can be lost within 30 seconds, through displacement or decay, unless they are repeated (rehearsed). Memory in the LTM is lost through decay, retrieval failure or interference PUT THIS IN YOUR NOTES

Check your understanding of the MSM 1. Which of the following is a memory process? Storage Duration Sensory 2. What is the capacity of the sensory memory? Large Small 3. What is the duration of the sensory memory Long Short 4. STM has a limited capacity True? False?

Now try using the Multi-Store model to explain Jack’s behaviour? Jack is a very able student and seems to understand everything while he is in class. He is so confident in his ability, that he decides not to do any revision for his GCSE’s. When he sits his exams, he finds that he can’t remember a thing! Explain this with reference to the Multi-Store Model

The exam The longest question you will get in AS Psychology is a 12 mark question, and 16 marks at A level. To achieve a level 4 answer you would need to address both skills being assessed, for example: Description (AO1) and Evaluation (AO3) How you structure your answer depends on whether you have been asked to describe and evaluate one or two theories/studies. Put this in separate notes on exam technique – Create your own hand out for this using A4 that you can use throughout the course

12-16 mark questions 8/12/16 marks on ONE theory/study AO1 12-16 marks on TWO theories/studies 8/12/16 marks on ONE theory/study AO1 Theory 1 (Key terms, examples, refer to research) or study 1 (AMPRC) described in detail eg specific findings/varations AO3 1 x strength 1 x weakness Theory/study 2 –describe in detail (3 evaluation points for 12 marks, using full PEEL structure, 4 full PEEL paragraphs for 16 marks) AO1 = 4/6/8 Include the key terms and ideas of the theory. Fully explain them. Include examples (6 MARKS) And refer to research (8 MARKS). For studies AMPRC in detail AO3 = 4/6/8 2 x PEEL (4 MARKS) 3 x PEEL (6 MARKS) 4 x PEEL (8 MARKS)

Exam question practice Complete the practice question tasks in the hand-outs provided

Your task Read through the example 12 mark answer. Write in the margin what sections are AO1 (outline) and which are AO3 (evaluation). Use different colour pens to highlight the following in the essay: Where the answer has explicitly identified the evaluation point (P) Where the answer has referred to supporting/challenging evidence (E) Where there is further elaboration/evidence/counter argument provided (‘E’) Where they have linked back to the question to show relevance (L)
