How and where do I use these things? Colons and Semicolons How and where do I use these things?

Colons The most important function of the colon is to act as a signal to the reader. It says something like, “Okay, reader! Here it comes!” Example I know this: colons and semicolons are confusing.

Colons Use a colon to separate two complete sentences when the second sentence provides more information Example The following information is important: you will learn how to use the colon.

Colons Use a colon to introduce a list after a complete sentence Example The use of these punctuation marks often confuses students: comma, semicolon, colon.

Rules of the list the colon states “that is” the colon must not separate the subject and verb or other necessary parts of the sentence NEVER use a colon after a verb or preposition

Colons Use a colon to introduce a quotation Example The Gettysburg Address begins this way: “Four score and seven years ago”

Colons General rules A colon is used where a period could be used when it separates two complete sentences. Colons should connect only complete sentences to complete sentences or complete sentences to lists or quotes. Do not use a colon in the middle of a complete sentence.

Don’t use a colon Problem If you want to learn about colons: listen to me. Revision If you want to learn about colons, listen to me. You want to know this: it is important to use colons properly.

Don’t use a colon Problem The typical essay consists of: an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Revision The typical essay consists of an introduction,

The Semicolon Think of it as an incredibly strong comma that can separate complete sentences, not just ideas (among other things!)

Semicolons Use a semicolon to separate two closely related complete sentences Example I don’t know how to use colons and semicolons; these punctuation marks confuse me.

Semicolons Use a semicolon to separate two complete but opposing sentences Example Jasmine likes to play in the rain; Kole likes to have an umbrella.

Semicolons Use a semicolon to connect two complete sentences using transition words, such as consequently, however, moreover, besides, therefore, in fact Example I’m confused about colons and semicolons; therefore, I’d like to learn more about them.

Semicolons Use a semicolon to separate items in a series that already includes commas Example My teachers this semester are Murphy, English 10; Rapin, Biology; Kjenner, Algebra I; and Foster, Spanish II.

Semicolons General rules A semicolon is used where a period could be used between two closely related complete sentences between two opposing complete sentences It is also used with a transition word that connects two complete sentences in a series that already uses commas

Some examples I am often confused by when to use these punctuation marks __ commas, colons, and semicolons. After sitting in the rain for an hour, we made the decision __ we would postpone the game.

Some examples Just ask me __ I know when to use a colon and when to use a semicolon. We bought a lot of clothes __ 2 shirts, $30 each __ 3 sweaters, on sale for $29 __ and 2 pair of pants, $59 for both.

Some examples Alphonso felt like wearing black today __ he was feeling dark and gloomy. Fred is a good speller __ Betty can’t spell his way out of a paper bag. I know how to use semicolons __ therefore, I will do well on a quiz.
