4 A colon can also be used to introduce an explanation, definition or quote:
For example: I’ll tell you what I’m going to do I’m going to quit. Elephant a large grey mammal. In Scene 5, Romeo states “Juliet I love you.”

5 I’ll tell you what I’m going to do: I’m going to quit.

7 The Semi-Colon The semi-colon consists of a comma with a dot above it ;

8 Mary drives a Mercedes; Jo drives a Volvo.
The semi-colon is often used to join together two connected clauses. For example: Mary drives a Mercedes; Jo drives a Volvo. Some people write with a word processor; others write with a pen or pencil.

9 Elephants live in hot countries. They cool off by bathing.
Technology at our school is a real success. The computers are top quality.

10 They link clauses connected by conjunctive adverbs or transitional phrases to connect closely related ideas (examples of conjunctive adverbs: also, however, otherwise, consequently, indeed, similarly, finally, likewise, then, furthermore, moreover, therefore, hence, nevertheless, thus, nonetheless; transitional phrase examples: in addition, in contrast, in the meantime, more importantly, for example, in the same way, on the contrary, on the other hand, that is to say, to summarise, by all means, of course, in fact)

11 However they choose to write, people are allowed to make their own decisions; as a result, many people swear by their writing methods.

12 Semi-colons also link lengthy clauses or clauses with commas to avoid confusion between clauses
E.g. Some people write with a word processor, typewriter, or a computer; but others, for different reasons, choose to write with a pen or pencil.
