Section 23.1 Preparing for a Career You are most likely to thrive in a career that matches your interests, aptitudes, and abilities. When choosing a career, you should consider factors such as work environment and the required education.

Career Options Choosing a career path may be difficult. People interested in working with children often choose careers directly related to child development or child care. career path All of the career moves and job experience that a person gains as he or she works toward a career goal.

Career Options One’s interests, aptitudes, and abilities must be considered when choosing a career. Learning about a career and gaining job experience can be done in a number of ways. aptitude A natural talent or potential for learning a skill.

Evaluate Careers There are many factors that must be considered when choosing a career: What does a worker in this career do? Do I want to work with people, information, or technology? How well does my aptitude match the aptitude needed for this career? List some of your own aptitudes. What careers might make use of these?

Setting and Achieving Goals Establishing career goals can help you achieve a career that is satisfying, challenging, and worthwhile. Many short-term goals will likely need to be met before you can achieve your career goal.

Section 23.2 Beginning your Career When looking for a job, it is important to be resourceful. A well-written résumé and cover letter show your professionalism and abilities. Always be prepared when going for a job interview.

Look for a Job Six steps to job hunting include: finding an opening. preparing a résumé. filling out an application. interviewing. following up. evaluating a job offer. résumé A concise document that summarizes your career objectives, education, work experience, and accomplishments. 10

Look for a Job Job seekers should take time to prepare for a job interview. When evaluating a job, salary is not the only thing that must be considered. What other factors should be considered besides salary? 11

Build Career Skills Employers look for job-specific skills and transferable skills. One way to make yourself a valuable employee is to continue learning new skills. job-specific skills The skills or abilities needed to do a specific job. transferable skills General skills used in school and in various types of jobs. 12

Leaving a Job Make every effort to leave your job on good terms. Do your job well until you leave. Some people lose their jobs because of poor performance, and some through no fault of their own. 13
