The Office of Curriculum Initiatives supports teaching and learning practices that are systematically integrated across disciplines and offered college-wide. The academic initiatives included in the department are regarded as ‘High Impact Educational Practices’ and have shown to increase student's retention and success in college (AAC&U, 2008).

Service Learning Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service Learning allows students and faculty to blend educational goals with their passions. 1. Examine and define the problem 2. Research information and tolls needed to solve the problem 3. Develop and execute a service project 4. Learn in partnership with the community

Learn to Serve. Serve to Learn. SLS2940 - Students receive 1 elective credit for every 20 service hours they complete. Students complete extensive research and reflection on their service experience under the guidance of a trained faculty mentor. SLS2940H - This course is part of the Seneff Honors College and involves the same work as SLS2940, while also satisfying one learning outcome for the Honors Program. Integrated – Faculty choose to integrate a service project into a traditional course. Students work with their peers to complete a direct, indirect, or advocacy project with a community partner. Integrated Service Learning courses don’t add additional fees to the course. All students earn Service Learning notation on their official transcript and a lapel pin the term of participation. Students earning 40 or more service hours receive a medallion to wear with their cap and gown at graduation. SLS2940 May be repeated for up to 4 credits Credits count as electives and are covered by financial aid Faculty mentors must complete an orientation with the Director of Curriculum Initiatives to be credentialed Students must meet the requirements of a minimum 2.0 GPA to apply SLS2940H Same requirements as above Some campuses require a minimum number of SLS2940H credits to earn an Honors certificate on their campus (ex: Leadership Track on Osceola) Integrated Classes Service hour choices include: 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 Faculty must complete “Service Learning Across the Discipline” and have an approved curriculum plan to integrate service hours in their course

Learning in Community (LinC) Valencia College offers a variety of learning communities for students to participate in. Some of the most popular models include LinC, REACH, CAMINO, and First 30. The key goals for learning communities are to encourage integration of learning across courses and to involve students with "big questions" that matter beyond the classroom (AAC&U, 2008). Students often build stronger bonds with their peers, including classmates, faculty and staff at the college because they spend more time together.
