Observation vs. Inference
Quiz 1 - Scientific Processing
Scientific Process How science works!! Long ago, in a classroom not too far away. A group of fourth graders attempted to master the scientific process.
Observation & Inference. Observations Any information collected with the senses. Quantitative – measureable or countable »3 meters long »4 marbles »50.
Earth Science August 31, 2011 Bellringer: Place in your Homework A 10 ml sample of a substance has a mass of 20 g. What would be the mass of a 100 ml sample.
 Observation is describing an object using your five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, & taste) or measurement (numbers).
 When describing something, use only facts that you can see, feel, smell, taste and hear  This is not an opinion!!!!!

Properties of Objects A Quiz. What is an observation?
an interaction of one or more of our (5) senses--sight, smell, hear, touch, or taste, within our surroundings or environment. Flash back….Last year question!!!!
\ Observation & Inference. Observations Any information collected with your 5 senses. The skill of describing scientific events Quantitative- Is measureable.
Write this on page 18 of your STAR book at the top: Section 1: Thinking Like a Scientist What skills scientists use to learn about the world.
Observation vs. Inference
Observation Observation: when studying something describe only facts that you can see, touch, smell and hear. You are not making any guesses. THIS IS.

Observing & Inferring. Observation: using the 5 senses to gather information (see, touch, smell, hear or taste) Inference: Making an interpretation based.
 The Scientific Method: 1. Make an O bservation a. Observation: Using one or more of the 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste or smell) to collect.
Section 1-2. Scientists use many skills to gather information. Most science skills use your 5 senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting.

Presentation transcript:

Topic: Scientific Skills Aim: What is the difference between observations and inferences? Do now: Observations are what you see, hear, taste, smell and touch. Observations can also be made with instruments exp. Mass or weight, temperature, etc.

What do you observe? What do you infer?

Your inference is your conclusion based on observations.
