Evaluation question 2 Rhys Funnell

What type of characters are in your film - age, gender, race, social class, profession, nationality? Benedict Black/Protagonist  Our opening title sequence involves two characters the antagonist (Benedict Black) and the protagonist (Sam Cooke). Benedict Black was inspired by John Doe in ‘se7en’ in the way he acts and thinks he is a mid to late 20’s black English male, he is very middle class and wears a black suit which is quite a typical thing in thriller films, he is a computer technician he is highly intelligent but very emotionally unstable due to his past.

Sam Cooke/Protagonist  Sam Cooke who was inspired by Jamie Foxx and the character he plays in ‘collateral’ as he is a person living their lives then is encountered by the antagonist is also a male in his mid to late 20’s and is white and English, he is casual and dresses very casually and has a very casual job, he works as an estate agent who played a big part on Blacks past…

Are they typical or untypical of the genre (are they typical teenager, mother, typical villain etc.)? Benedict Black/Antagonist  Benedict black is quite a typical based villain of a thriller film, he has a high psychotic level and is very emotionally unstable and it is also quite typical how its something to do with his past that had affected his future as this is quite often seen in thriller films.

Sam Cooke/Protagonist  Sam Cooke much like Benedict Black is also very stereotypical of the thriller genre. He has a very casual life, he works as an estate agent which is also quite stereotypical because usually the protagonist is casual or can even become the victim of target of the film.

What can you say about their representation? Benedict Black/Antagonist  Benedict Black is an aggressive, mentally and emotionally unstable person which is the outcome of his past which is not revealed fully which is quite stereotypical of the thriller genre where there is a sense of mystery and for the way the antagonist is and acts. He works alone and has a slightly psychotic aim to find and capture someone from his past who had an affect on his future.

Sam Cooke representation  Sam Cooke is your average everyday human who lives a normal life and is very casual in comparison to Benedict Black. He is like everyone else is society with a well paid job and lives his everyday life.

How does your choice of mise-en-scene give the audience clues to the ‘type’ of character(s) you have in your film? Benedict Black/Antagonist.  Benedict is wearing a black suit which is used to symbolise his dark side and to show that he is possibly a very devious and intelligent antagonist who knows what he's doing and the setting is very dark and remote that he lives in with could show his high level of psychosis.

Same Cooke/Protagonist mise-en-scene  Sam Cooke is dressed normally with smart shoes and is dressed very casually which shows that he fits in with society and is your normal everyday person in comparison to the antagonist Benedict Black.

Do your characters reflect those you have studied in other films? Give examples of similar film characters. Benedict Black/Antagonist.  The inspiration we got for Benedict Black was from collateral with Tom Cruise because he is dressed very casually wearing a suit and seems very calm about everything and is a very strange and mysterious antagonist.

Sam Cooke/Protagonist Character  The idea of Sam Cooke is seen in many films really a victim with a normal life who has a turn of events when they become involved in some way with the antagonist. There was no particular inspiration from any other films for this character.
