ORIGAMI LESSON 1

This term we will be working on an origami project. We are going to be working on it for the next couple of weeks. The aim of this is to get you interested in origami as well as folding some models yourself. Hopefully this term will be fun and a change from all your other lessons. All of the lessons we have are going to be practical so you will have a ‘hands on’ lesson every time. First of all though, we have to know a bit about where origami comes from.

Dictionary Definition The art of folding paper. That is all it is. Folding a piece of paper into a shape which is detailed enough to know what it is.

Where does origami come from? Origami ( 折り紙 ), from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper" is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD at the latest and was popularized outside of Japan in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami. Paper cutting and gluing is usually considered kirigami. The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The best known origami model is probably the Japanese paper crane. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. Traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603–1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper or using nonsquare shapes to start with. ORIGAMI CHALLENGE. Each table will be given a set of instructions on how to make an origami crown. I will give you from when I say GO until 5 minutes before the end of the lesson to fold as many origami crowns as possible. At the end of the lesson I will count how many crowns each table has made and the table with the most crowns at the end of the time limit will win a prize! GOOD LUCK. If you need any help, put your hand up and I will come to you. REMEMBER- Fold neatly and Take your time… well you might need to be quick to beat everyone else.
