Unit 1 Spelling Phonics and Spelling Rules = Keys

Phonics/Spelling Rule 1  When you have a vowel and a consonant with a silent e at the end, the vowel will have a long sound. A long vowel sound says the name of the vowel: “a” as in ale; “e” as in eve; “i” as in ice; “o” as in old; and “u” as in cube.

Rule 1 Examples

Phonics/Spelling Rule 2  When you have a vowel and two of the same consonants, the Vowel will have a short sound. Short vowel sounds: “a” as in add; “i” as in ill; “o” as in odd; and “u” as in up

Rule 2 Examples

Phonics/Spelling Rule 3  When the root word has a “silent e” at the end, you must drop that “silent e” before you add a suffix like “-ing”. Example 1: Example 2:
