DNS Operations SIG Report Joe Abley, ISC APNIC 18 Nadi, Fiji, September 2004

DNS Operations SIG Meeting was held on Thursday, and was well-attended Around 70 people A full agenda of informational updates APNIC operational updates Global efforts in IPv6 and DNSSEC extensions to the DNS

Action Items Action dns Secretariat to implement proposal “Lame delegation cleanup revised” (prop-004-v001) Work is proceeding on this action item, and implementation is expected to be complete by the end of September George Michaelson presented No new action items.

APNIC Nameserver Load Terry Manderson of APNIC Staff gave an informational update about measurements of APNIC-operated nameservers Master nameservers and slaves APNIC nameserver infrastructure is performing well, and looks to be ready to scale to cope with registration growth and also DNSSEC

Lame Delegations George Michaelson of APNIC Staff presented a summary of the implementation status of lame delegation checking at APNIC Implementation work is largely complete Testing is proceeding System is due to be turned on at the end of September 2004

DNS Generation System Terry Manderson presented a summary of the new zone generation system built for APNIC Database-driven, allowing easy integration with other systems Massive increase in performance (40 minute zone builds reduced to 1 minute) Currently in acceptance testing

Root Server Coordination George Michaelson presented a status report on APNIC coordination work with root server deployment in the region Direct facilitation of APNIC-funded root server deployment is proceeding Coordination with other root server operators for deployments in the region Benefits to local economies for local root servers were discussed

IPv6 Transport for IN-ADDR.ARPA George Michaelson presented an informal analysis on the addition of IPv6 transport for the IN-ADDR.ARPA zone The analysis described risks to the reverse DNS from the introduction of v6 transport, but also substantial benefits Risks to service are considered minimal APNIC already provides IPv6 transport on dual-stack nameservers

DNSSEC Deployment Bill Manning of EP.NET presented a status report for the deployment of DNSSEC in the global DNS Standardisation efforts Roles of ICANN and others in the roll-out Noted that APNIC will have a significant role in key management with members, and with NIRs

Root Zone IPv6 Glue Records Bill Manning presented a discussion about the issues surounding IPv6 support in the root zone AAAA records for TLD nameservers have been added, and more continue to be added by IANA AAAA records for root nameservers have not yet been added, but there is hope that this will happen soon

Mailing List Use of the DNS-SIG mailing list remains extremely low, although lots of interest in DNS operations is evident from meetings Mailing list remains available, should the community find it useful for discussion or coordination

Thanks Many thanks to the APNIC staff involved in the DNS-SIG meeting, for presentations and for logistics support Thanks as well to the non-APNIC presenter
