3 Cases 1.The job ticket specifies a Media that CAN be handled in the specified orientation by the Digital Printer 2.The job ticket specifies a Media that MUST be handled by the Digital Printer with a different orientation than the specified one, due to device constraints (media size, finishing…) 3.The job ticket specifies a Media that SHOULD be handled by the Digital Printer in a different orientation, for instance due to Media specificities (grain, shape, speed…) Very often, the PrePress Operator prepares the job independently of these Press constraints

2 configurations 1.The RIP is separated from the Digital Printer 2.The RIP is combined with the Digital Printer

The Workflow Components (1) Digital PrePress application – JDF Processes: LayoutPreparation or Stripping, Imposition – Input Resources: RunList (Document) Instructions defining the imposition layout (LayoutPreparationParams or StrippingParams) The Media(s) to be used, as refelement LayoutPreparationParams/Media or StrippingParams/Media – There is is used to specify Portrait/Landscape: X Y) – Other Input Media Catalog (= List of available Media with dimensions but no orientation). Can be read from a Device via JMF Resource Query. – Output Resources RunList (Surface): the imposed document (nothing about which Media was used)

The Workflow Components (2) RIP – JDF Processes: Interpreting, Rendering Optionally: ColorSpaceConversion, Trapping, Screening – Input: RunList (Surface): the imposed document InterpretingParams, RenderingParams The Media(s) to be used, as refelement InterpretingParams/Media – is used to select Portrait/Landscape: X Y ). – Media has been deprecated in JDF 1.2 as input resource of Rendering process and as refelement in RenderingParams – Output: RunList (ByteMaps) (nothing about which Media was used)

The Workflow Components (3) Digital Printer – JDF Processes: DigitalPrinting, some Finishing (Folding, Stitching…) – JDF Input: RunList(ByteMaps) The Media(s) to be used, as Input Resource Media mounting in trays can lead to a Rotation, specified in attribute of the MediaLink – JDF Output: Component (printed document)

Orientation and Rotation Orientation is how the Media is used when defining the Layout – Portrait or Landscape – It is expressed via Dimensions (X Y) Rotation is how the Media is used in the input tray – Rotate/Flip 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees – It is expressed in They are both necessary. Media Orientation cannot be deduced from the Content orientation! The RIP needs to know both Media Orientation and Media Rotation.

Facts In a Media Catalog, a Media – has dimensions – has neither orientation nor rotation – may have a preferred edge feed The Media rotation in the printer tray is either forced by a constraint or freely chosen, preferably using the preferred edge feed. The output of Imposition is independent from the rotation of the Media in the input tray The output of the RIP must be rotated according to how the Media fed in the Digital Printer input tray Media is NOT an input resource of Interpreting and Rendering but is refelement in InterpretingParams. There is in a refelement!  The usage of MediaLink for the RIP is not possible with JDF as it is now! When RIP is included in Digital Printer, the Media rotation in the Tray is internally managed. It is not specified in the input JDF.

Proposals 1.Extend processes resources to specify the Media Orientation as input to the Ripping process, so that the RIP knows which rotation to apply – Un-deprecate Media input resource in Rendering; so that can be used ? – to RunListLink ? – Add a new Media attribute ? 2.Extend JMF with a mechanism allowing an OMS or MIS to query a Printer about a Media Orientation Constraint or Choice, so that it can correctly instruct the RIP – Add a new Media attribute and get it via JMF Resource Query ? 3.Extend JDF to allow specifying a preferred Media orientation in a Media Catalog (list of Media without MediaLink) that can be read via JMF Resource Query – Add a new Media attribute, returned via JMF Resource Query ?
