Trade Shows 3-1 Also known as trade fairs, trade exhibitions, and trade expos, trade shows display products and services from a certain industry. These events are attractive for both exhibitors (people who attend the event) and attendees. Some of the people attending the event are buyers or suppliers who are looking to do business with the exhibitors. Others are members of the general public who are interested in buying products for themselves.

Trade Shows 3-1 Ex.

Trade shows 3-2 It’s common for trade shows to be named after the type of business that are being highlighted. For example, a trade show focusing on cars is often called a “car show” or an “auto show.” Likewise, there are numerous “boat shows,” “computer expos,” and “home shows” (there display items to be used inside and around the home, not the buildings themselves) around the world.

Trade Shows 3-3 T/F 1. ____ Trade shows usually display products only, so they are not held for service sector. 2. ____ There are two types of attendees in a trade show—one is the buyer or supplier; the other the general public. 3. ____ Usually a trade show is named after the name of its organizer.

Conventions, Conferences, and Congresses 3-1 These terms are similar because they are all meetings of large groups of people. Conferences tend to involve more discussion among participants who attend the event and the possible presentations of papers and/or the results of experiments and other academic research (although a business conference would not feature these elements).

In many cases, however, the terms conference and convention are used interchangeably. The decision whether to call an event a conference or convention may depend upon individual preference. On the other hand, congress is a term that is used less frequently. A congress is a very formal gathering that usually involves representatives from international organizations or governments. Congresses typically deal with significant issues. Conventions, Conferences, and Congresses 3-2

T/F (T for true and F for false) ____1. A meeting for academic research is often called a conference. ____2. In many ways, a conference is quite different from a convention. ____3. A business conference usually features the experiment results and scientific studies. Conventions, Conferences, and Congresses 3-3

Q &A 1.What’s the MICE market worth? It’s difficult to estimate exactly, but some sources report that it’s worth around US$ 30 billion a year, worldwide. Singapore relies heavily on MICE; about 30% of its tourism revenue ( 歲收 ) comes from MICE. Malaysia’s also targeting the MICE market.

Q &A W 2. What other countries are involved in MICE? At the moment, it’s mainly the industrial countries in Europe and North America than are involved in MICE. But the emerging BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are also targeting the MICE market. In fact, in 2006, Brazil made it to the International Congress and Conference Association (ICCA) top ten for meetings. It’s a very highly competitive market. Recently, Asian countries have joined the race for MICE events, offering exotic destinations at very competitive prices.ICCA

Q &A 3. How 3. How do companies choose a MICE destination? Generally speaking, companies chose locations based on their core business values and the relative cost of destination. They tend to stay fairly close to their headquarters. The Incentive market’s more diverse; firms usually choose to send employees to more exotic destinations. Motivational programs are important for staff retention.

Q &A 4.Is there 4. Is there a single, more important factor that a MICE destination should offer? Probably the issue of safety and security is the primary concern, though people are always looking for new, different destinations. From the point of view of safety, Taiwan should be a favored destination. It’s still remarkably safe to travel in Taiwan.

Exercise Q1: ________?What does ICCA stand for A: It stands for International Congress and Conference Association. Q2 : _____? : In Singapore, how much of its tourism revenue comes from MICE? A: About 30%. Q3: _____? Why is Taiwan a favored destination for MICE A: Because it’s so safe.

Q4: _______? Why is motivational program so important? A: If you want to keep your staff, you have to keep them motivated and enthusiastic. Q5: ______? Which of the emerging country enter top ten for meetings in 2006? A: A: Brazil.
