Culture and Inclusion: Achieving Equity and Equality Facilitator: Segio Aguilar-Gaxiola A.Connecting communities to heal and rebuild 1. Connect communities through acceptance, understanding, education, and compassion. 2. Increase education in diversity training. 3 Be intentional in our efforts: - Sustainability - Understand and engage community and its needs B.Cultural Practices to embrace cultural differences, build relationships, and advocate for acceptance 1. Celebrate each others heritage, appreciate, and partake in local festivities, the foods, music and hospitality. 2. Form real connections with those not like us via cultural events. 3. Using Community events to bring diverse groups together.

Offer respect, avoiding labels, and dignify the person/ family share opportunities for hope and having quality living. 2. Delivering services to schools (not only clinical but educational) at schools, non-stigmatized settings. Use community members (peers, family members, community) to outreach and engage. 3. Broader representation in demographics in surveys at the state and national level. This will help for us to see where the disparities are happening within communities in specific to underserved groups.

Culturally aware and sensitive education (Will involve engaging healthcare systems, translating NAMI materials into threshold languages for distribution, NAMI convening and facilitating events involving health care providers and NAMI) 2. Advocacy (legislative, engaging community leaders, involves being a disruptive as well as positive force for change) 3. Support (universal theme found in answers to all questions and involves what has been previously stated)

Community engagement leveraging cultural expertise within specific communities and cultural events to increase awareness of mental health issues within specific communities/disparities 2. Maximizing the use of personal and family stories in our messaging to healthcare systems, providers, decision makers, legislators, etc Maximize use of digital distribution via social media (YouTube, FB Live, QR codes on printed materials Develop an approach to match like backgrounds to like background (physicians to physicians, law enforcement to law enforcement, faith based family members to faith based family members, LGBTQ youth to LGBTQ youth) 3. Collaboration (finding similarities among diversity)

Relationships: Increasing Partnerships Facilitator: Guy Qvistgaard C.Outcomes that would make a difference 1. Health plan report cards 2. Provider report cards 3. Education - CM program requirements for primary care, ED physicians, etc 4. Develop a cost benefit analysis for early intervention to distribute and publish to health plans i.e. mandate HEDIS specific mental health measures for health plans 5. Publish best practices in mental health and physical health integration and distribute accordingly

Advocacy: Increasing Awareness and Acceptance Facilitator: Gustavo Loera A.Connecting communities to heal and rebuild 1. Make sure underserved communities have a voice and can build trust by sharing lived experiences in a safe space. 2. Connecting with the media to properly portray Mental Health (NAMI should be the GO TO) VISIBILITY OF NAMI! (PSA’s) 3. Educating the community including service providers, police and peers around Mental Health. Reduce the silence around Mental Illness. 4. Having a stronger NAMI presence in the County and Behavioral Health Dept. B.Cultural Practices to embrace cultural differences, build relationships, and advocate for acceptance 1. Culturally linguistic outreach and access to programs serving diverse communities 2. Gathering through civic community events and other cultural or awareness events 3. Changing the verbiage around Mental Health discussions (Health Vs Illness) MINDFULNESS 4. Mandating NAMI Programs such as Ending The Silence in public schools and having teachers be properly trained on Mental Health. Mental Health training in the workplace and for all public servants.

Continue to ask critical questions in order to bring out best practices within the Mental Health field 2. Understanding how to have cultural sensitivity 3. Connecting individuals through education and awareness 4. Creating strong positive relationships and supportive networks that empowers and creates more solutions.

Capacity: Training and Retaining Leaders Facilitator: Kimberly Knifong A.Connecting communities to heal and rebuild 1. Ask what communities need and want. 2. Create safe, open place for people to have a dialogue. 3. Have diversity in Board and leadership of organizations to be culturally competent in the work you do. B.Cultural Practices to embrace cultural differences, build relationships, and advocate for acceptance 1. Maintain connections, it is not a one and done. It is a process. 2. Bring consumer, those with lived experience and family members voices to the dialogue. 3. Engage inter-generations, and communities not usually working/talking together (eg. Black Lives Matter, Muslim, and Law Enforcement).

Capacity: Training and Retaining Leaders Facilitator: Kimberly Knifong C.Outcomes that would make a difference 1. Roundtable discussions with various cultural groups to ask “How can we serve you.” Be flexible to allow for learning and dialogue on emergent issues. Can’t always follow the script. 2. Do pre-orientation prior to start classes to provide context and set expectations and allow for strong sharing. This avoids disruption and feelings of disrespect during classes including family members regardless of age to promote knowledge and understanding. 3. Use technology to expand reach and participation (eg. Online classes and webinars and video training.)
