Agenda  Greeting  Discussion  Assignment  Reading  Questions

Hello Everybody! Let’s share something good that happened this week! What is the word of the week?

Reminders Make sure you complete and submit any outstanding assignments and discussion questions by the end of week 9 Final writing assignment will be due at the end of week 10 This is the final seminar Celebrate your accomplishment!

Objectives of Unit 9 Objective 1 Recognize the importance of career action planning Objective 2 Complete the Unit 9 Assignment – your very own career action plan

Reflection In this unit, you will reflect upon information from course readings, assignments, career research, the informational interview assignment, and the LASSI assessment as you complete your Unit 9 Assignment – Career Action Plan “Surround yourself only with people who are going to lift you higher.” Oprah Winfrey

Discussion Board Explain why a Career Action Plan will be useful to you as you continue to plan and prepare for your career. Why might you need to revise your plan from time to time?

Unit 9 Assignment For your project, you will develop your own Career Action Plan based on information you have gained in this course Consider information from course readings, assignments, career research, the informational interview assignment and the LASSI assessment Be sure to use the resources of Career Services and O*Net to help you.

Unit 9 Assignment Write a minimum of 2 paragraphs related to the interview with a business professional Write at least 5 good quality sentences in each paragraph Include a topic sentence and a conclusion Don’t forget to use APA format!

I. Interview Response: After reviewing your Interview with a Professional turned in as your Unit 8 Assignment, write 2 complete paragraphs in which you respond to the following questions: What information from the interview helped you the most and how will you use this information as you continue to prepare for your own career? Make sure to use the paragraph format we focused on in Unit 5: Start with a topic sentence, develop your ideas with supporting sentences/details, and end with a concluding sentence (minimum two paragraphs, each with five complete sentences).

Pay attention to each section Thoughtful note: Just because we set a minimum does not mean this is what you should do. That is for people who are only doing this because it is an assignment, rather than understanding the value of this activity. "No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction." Charles Kendall Adams I. Interview Response: After reviewing your Interview with a Professional turned in as your Unit 8 Assignment, write 2 complete paragraphs in which you respond to the following questions: What information from the interview helped you the most and how will you use this information as you continue to prepare for your own career? Spend some time on this part! Dates include month, day, year ~ i.e. 12/31/2012

Grading Rubric for all Projects

Let’s talk about your interview How did it go for you? How did you prepare for it? Is there anything you would do differently if you had the chance to do it again? What value did you gain?

Hopefully the interview: Provided you with insight about a career you are interested in Was not completed with a relative (because this person is already in your network). Expanded your network Included detailed answers for most of the questions. If the interviewee was not detailed, then they were encouraged to give more. If you had holes, you may be able to call back and ask more questions. Remember that this is for your benefit, so make sure the interview results added the insight that you needed to complete the CAP. If you need more information—call the person back and ask for it! Remember that this is for your benefit, so make sure the interview results added the insight that you needed to complete the CAP. If you need more information—call the person back and ask for it!

What questions do you have?

Reflections on the Course What was the most valuable or practical part of this course and why did you find it valuable/practical? What was the most difficult or frustrating part of the course and why did you find it so challenging or frustrating? If you could change or IMPROVE one thing about yourself (as a student) for next term, what would it be and why? How will you make this improvement or change?

Reflections on the Course The great statesman, Winston Churchill once gave a speech at his former school. He got up to the podium, looked at the students and guests in the audience and said: "Never, never, never, never give up." At that point Mr. Churchill turned around and sat back down. That was the extent of his speech. So what I want you to take from this course is…Never give up!

Reflections on the Course “Holistic---relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts.“ Up to this point in the course we have been looking at the PARTS, not the whole Now it’s time to put the pieces together

Reflections on the Course Unit 1 – You can do it  How do you feel now? Unit 2 – Manage Your Time and Your Stress  Have you developed stress management skills? Unit 3 - Learning Styles  Have you adjusted lessons to fit the learning style that is best for you?

Reflections on the Course Unit 4 - Critical Thinking and Research  Are you asking more questions?  What are the 6 questions to consider? Unit 5 - The Writing Process  Have you developed better writing skills? Unit 6 – Reading  Have you increased your reading speed and comprehension?  Who remembers the critical review period?

Reflections on the Course Unit 7 – Goals and Planning  What are the best kind of goals to establish? Unit 8 – Career Planning  O*Net and Kaplan Career Services Unit 9 – Career Project When we put all of these "parts" together, what do you think they add up to?

SUCCESS!! WHOLE STUDENT = THE SUCCESSFUL STUDENT

Final Thoughts “Life is what we make it; always has been, always will be.” (Grandma Moses) Keep an open mind Remain flexible Have you found some STRENGTH in yourself that maybe you did not SEE before this class? Internal and external motivation –Your LASSI score on motivation should provide a clue to your level of taking responsibility for success in college

Students With Low Motivation:  Not clear about how college fits in with their academic, social, and occupational goals  Easily distracted when completing assignments  May find it difficult to get started or complete their homework or other class projects  May not put much effort into assignments  May find it difficult to participate in class and to stay focused on learning the information being taught  Likely to blame someone or something else for their poor performance, such as the teacher or the difficulty of the test, rather than accepting responsibility for not studying enough or for not studying the right material.

Highly Motivated Students:  Understand how succeeding in college fits with their personal, academic, social, and occupational goals  Focus on goals to stay committed to putting forth the effort and doing what is necessary to benefit from college  Are more likely to work hard at participating in their classes and at learning the material presented  Are more likely to keep working in the face of difficulties when trying to understand a concept or complete a long, complex assignment  Tend to see success as a function of their effort  Understand that there are factors they can't control and focus on the factors that are controllable

Final Thoughts "Do not worry if you have built your castles in the air. They are where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." ~Henry David Thoreau (from Walden)

Questions? What questions do you have regarding the material covered tonight? Thank you for allowing me to start this journey with you! Good night and thanks for coming!!!
