STETKA – ENGLISH 12 – QUARTER 1 WRITING A RESUME

What is a resume? A resume is a tool that will help you get a job!

What needs to be included in a resume? In all resumes: Your name, address, & phone number An objective/summary Education Work Experience Can be included by not necessary: Volunteering Awards Organizations involved in Special Skills Certifications

Choosing a Resume Format There are three basic types of a resume Chronological Functional Combination of the two.

Chronological Resume Probably the one people are most familiar with Great format for a resume if you are tying to show job growth Work experience is listed in reverse chronological order (most recent job first) The name of the employer is written first, along with the period of time in which you were employed. The employer’s location and a description of the various tasks you had throughout the job should also be included.

Functional Resume Categorizes skills by function, emphasizing your abilities Very useful if changing careers and want to show how you can transfer your skills A job objective is given first, followed by several paragraphs, each discussing a different job function (Supervision, Management, Writing, etc.) – begin with the one you want to emphasize most Previous employment or education is not as important in a functional resume as it is in a chronological one

Combination Resume Exactly how it sounds – combination of both a chronological and functional resume Include paragraphs describing job functions at the beginning of your resume Follow that with a reverse chronological listing of your work experience Education should also be included in this resume This type of resume is useful if duties in a single job were very diverse or you stayed with a company for a long time and continued to move up

Things you want to include in your resume… Include a career or job objective if it’s specific. If your objective is general, instead include a summary of skills and qualifications. Include all work experience and education. Include any strengths and accomplishments in your job descriptions or skills

Things you DO NOT want included in your resume… Do not list salaries for any job Do not include personal information, such as date of birth, marital status, religion, ethnicity, height, weight or health Do not include names of supervisors or references. You may end your resume with “References available on request” but this is optional Do not use the word Resume on the top of the page as a title
