Does bullying occur at BC? What can be done to prevent/ address this issue?

Possible Targets of Bullying Students with disability Minorities Studious Students Isolated Students Quiet Students Students that look afraid or weak Students with low self-esteem

4 Conditions of Bullying Bullies have more influence, have group backing, or some other advantage over the target person. Bullies intend to harm, humiliate, or embarrass their targets. Bullies repeat their bullying behavior. Bullies appear nonchalant while the victims appear rather upset.

Why Children Bully Because they can. They may not even have a reason. Popularity To appear mean and tough so they wont get picked on themselves. Jealousy Attention

What you can do in the moment Ignore Bullies; Don’t look at them Don’t cry or get angry; Don’t show them you are upset Turn the comment into a joke Turn and walk away Talk to an adult

Ways to avoid future bullying Don’t bring expensive things or a lot of money to school. Label your belongings in case they get stolen. Avoid unsupervised areas. Act confident. Try to walk with at least one person.

Why do others let it happen They don’t want to be labeled as a snitch. They don’t want the bully to retaliate. They don’t think speaking up will help. Students are entertained by the bullying. Students side with the bully because others students look up to the bully and they believe they will never become the victim.

Some things you can say if someone is getting bullied That’s not funny. Stop playing. Cut it out. How would you like it if someone did that to you.

Golden Rule Treat other students the way you want to be treated. Say only what you would want other students to say to you. Do only what you would want other students to do to you.

Are you a bully? Does it make you feel better to hurt other people or take their things? Are you bigger and stronger than other people your age? Do you sometimes use your size and strength to get your way?

Are you a bully con’t Have you been bullied by someone in the past and feel like you have to make up for doing the same thing to others? Do you avoid thinking about how other people might feel if you say or do hurtful things to them?

Next Steps Say something if you witness someone being bullied. Say something if you have been or are currently being bullied. Confide in a teacher or see your Guidance Counselor immediately. Remember If you don’t say anything, we can’t do anything.
