FISH By: Natalia, Iosif, and Randy

Characteristics of Fish ● Fins- Fin like structures attached to the endoskeleton. ● Scales- Hard, thin plates that cover the skin and protect the body. ● Most fish secrete a slimy mucus that also helps them move through the water. ● Fish vary in size, shape, color, living environments, and other factors. ● 95% of all species of fish are bony fish. ● There are three categories of fish; jawless fish, jawed cartilaginous fish, and bony fish. ● Most fish are torpedo-shape (fusiform) for efficient travel through water

Body Systems ● All fish have highly developed sensory systems. ● Most fish have a lateral line system, which is made up of a shallow canal like structure that extends along the length of the fishes body and is filled with sensory organs ● It allows fish to sense its environment and movement ● Fish have a two chambered heart. ● Oxygen filled blood mixes with carbon dioxide filled blood.

Fish Reproduction ● All fish reproduce sexually ● Female fish release a large number of eggs into water. Males then swim over the eggs and release sperm. This is called spawning. ● Sexual reproduction is controlled by sex hormones. ● The production of sex hormones depends on environmental factors ● Some fish have fertile eggs inside their bodies, the eggs develop and hatch in the females body.

Types of Fish ● Jawless fish- have round, toothed mouths and long, tube like bodies covered with scaleless, slimy skin. ● Jawed cartilaginous fish- have endoskeletons made of cartilage like jawless fish and have movable jaws. ● Bony fish- are fish that have skeleton made of bones.

Importance & Origins of Fish ● First animals to be eaten by humans ● Most scientists agree that most fish evolved from small, soft bodies, filter feeding organisms similar to lancelets ● Bunny fish are probably descended from acanthodians ● They are food for animals and humans ● Eat large amount of insect larvae, such as mosquitoes, which keeps insect population in check. ● They are important to the U.S. economy.

The End Thats all folks!
