Multisectoral partnerships and stakeholder engagement: Legacies of Apartheid Structural (high inequality, unemployment, poverty) Ambivalent role of business sector Advanced corporate social responsibility policies CSR associated with compliance but also corporate citizenship and social investment how can companies and communities work together to achieve sustainability and socio-economic development ?

Civil society organisations (CSOs) in CSR practices Companies channel CSR programmes through CSOs to reach stakeholders and to generate support from communities 54% of CSR spending goes to non-profit organisations (2013, top 200 South African companies) How does CSR shape non- profit orgs? –23% of CSO funding comes from corporations

 What do companies, non-profits and communities understand as, and expect from, partnerships? What are the goals of community engagement?  How do NGOs represent communities in CSR partnerships?  How were key areas negotiated?  What were the challenges for companies in partnering with non-profits?
