Don’t Stay Dopey: Living Life with Purpose By Mrs. Sandoval

“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song” - Maya Angelou Reflection:

What is your Purpose? Why do you exist? Every area of life has to come in line with your purpose or else you will be frustrated or discouraged. –Investments –Finances –Relationships –Goals

Homework: Find your Purpose Read article Finding Your Life’s Purpose Write down your purpose We will journal about the process of finding your purpose on Tuesday in class

Planning 1.You always need a plan to grow in all areas of life 2.Goal setting 3.Planning always involves figuring out ahead of time what its going to cost you both positively and negatively.

1. Growing Whole Mentally Physically Spiritually Emotionally Socially

2. Goal Setting Goals should be worded as positive statements “Bad Ex. I don’t want to fail this class” Write detailed goals: Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant Time-bound

2a. Prioritizing Goals Short term with in weeks, or months Long term 5-20 years way 1.Have a BIG GOAL to strive for. 2.Break it into a series of smaller goals. 3.Break the smaller goals down into monthly and weekly goals. 4.Break them down further into daily goals. EXAMPLE: If one of your long-term goals is to get an electrical engineering degree in five years, you can set up enabling goals for each semester or quarter of college that supports this long-term goal. These goals could include attending classes, participating in professional development and internship opportunities at your school, maintaining a certain grade point average, and staying up-to- date in your readings and assignments.

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time bound

3. COUNT THE COST What will it cost you on the positive and the negative in order to fulfill your goals? Example: Graduating a year early in order to get married. POSITIVES vs. NEGATIVES

Pruning Some things have to be eliminated from your life so you can grow –Attitudes –Mindsets –Relationships

Pressing Push against something- usually yourself Situations will manage you if you don’t manage yourself. Have help pressing- use other people to help you Anticipate the out come of decisions you are going to make before you make them so the results from that decision won’t catch you off guard.

Anticipate: Pressure Determine your characteristics that you believe contribute to your success Determine your characteristics that you believe contribute to your failures –Your innate ability (e.g., "I'm a really smart person," or "I just really can't do math." ) –Other people (e.g., teachers, advisors, friends) –Your effort (e.g., "I always try my hardest.") –Luck (e.g., "I had a bad day.") SUCCESS BOX

Persevere Stick with it for the long haul Get around people that will encourage you to keep going “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” -Helen Keller

Promotion Seeing results and increase –Reach your career goal –See relationship improvements –Making Money –Other outcomes from the goals you set

Perfecting When you’re finally accomplished something then you have to perfect it. This is a looping process that keeps us growing on an ongoing basis. Purpose Planning Pruning Pressing Perseverance Promotion Perfecting
