Finding Sources for Support Ms. Logan English I

UNACCEPTABLE Sources Wikipedia Google Blogs Chat forums Almost all.com sites

Here’s Why A SOURCE is the authority figure for your paper. It supports your opinion and provides evidence to sway the reader to your point of view.

Acceptable Sources Journal Articles Magazine/Newspaper articles from respected publications Most information pulled from a.org,.gov, or.edu website Professional opinions offered via interview by certified individuals

Example of In-text Citations According to Dr. Phillip Roberts, liposuction is “growing at a rate of 2.4% per year” (“Living Big” 22). Now this may not seem like a lot, but when 1.2 million people are already getting liposuction (Sinclair 2), that increase of a little over two percent brings a total of 10,000 new cases per year to this dangerous procedure. People should stop contributing to the trend of vanity and work to be healthy.

Why? In-text citations are a road map to your Works Cited page. A Works Cited page and citations PREVENT YOU FROM BEING ACCUSED OF PLAGIARISM If you PLAGIARIZE, you will receive an ‘F’ on your assignment. It doesn’t matter what you say. We don’t tolerate cheaters.

How to Avoid Plagiarism Quote information that you pull directly from the source (this should be limited to one or two sentences per time used; anything too quote heavy is not actually YOUR work) Paraphrase information Summarize the information

Normally we will present a cited piece of information, and then interpret it or make a comment on it. Stringing along two or three pieces of cited information in a row is frowned upon because it means you are not drawing conclusions and/or coming up with your own original ideas.
