Modular C ontroller S eries Product Introduction

Modular Controller

Multi-zone PID controller Each “module” controls one loop “Hot Swapping” capability –No reprogramming of module Communicates via RS-232, RS-485, or ETHERNET!! Programmed via PC software

Modular Controller Configuration Software: “Crimson” –User Friendly tool to set up communications, PID parameters, etc. Software is FREE from our website

Historically Relays, panel mounted timers, counters, meters, and controllers were the heart of machine control

Historically, contd. The PLC, and subsequently the PC, began replacing these components The basic driver behind this trend is the reduction of components, wiring, etc.

Now Bus technology provides path to improvement of overall system design –Reduction of wiring time (labor) –Ease of troubleshooting (diagnostics) allows deskilling of support

Conclusion Continual improvement to current machine design involves integration of controls with one goal in mind… Reduction of Costs –Lower material costs Smaller panels Cheaper components –Lower labor costs Less wiring time Reduction of minimum required skills Deskilling of staff

Opportunities Exist Today’s solutions still have room for improvement… –PID control! PCs & PLCs don’t do the job well, or lack basic features, i.e. autotune, ease of programming, desired number of loops, etc. PLCs do not offer single-loop hot-swap change out like panel-mounted controllers Customers want to fully integrate PID with an HMI, but are forced to rely on older technology… panel mounted temperature controllers

Solution Modular Controller Series

Build your system with… –One CSMSTR Master module Provides hierarchical control and communications –Up to 16 CSPID PID control modules Each performs the function of a panel mounted controller CS Overview

Building a System Bases are plugged into Master –No space is wasted on a fixed-length backplane –Automatically connects power and communications Terminator is added to the end of the rail

Building a System, contd. Modules are plugged into bases

System Features If any module, or the main controller fails, the rest of the modules continue working Hot-swappable –The failed module can be replaced while power is applied –The CSMSTR keeps a copy of each module’s configuration, so a replaced module assumes proper operation No reprogramming necessary Minimizes downtime

CSPID1 – PID Control Module PID controller –Universal input Thermocouples, RTDs, 0-10 VDC or 0(4)-20 mA –Three discrete outputs Outputs 1 and 2 –Both form A relay (3 Amp AC), or –Both NFET (1 Amp DC sink) Output 3 is always a form C (5 Amp SPDT) –Optional 0-10 VDC/0(4)-20 mA analog output For control or retransmission of variables –Optional heater current monitor (100mA AC) Detects failing heaters and failed output circuits

CSMSTR – Master Supports up to 16 modules –Provides power Minimizes wiring –Communicates with modules with proprietary, high speed protocol High speed communication reduces latency –Auto-identifies connected modules Minimizes configuration time –Stores firmware, as well as config. info for modules, and updates them automatically No firmware conflicts, or difficult upgrades!

CSMSTR – Master, contd. 3 ports allow communications to PLC, HMI, SCADA, etc. –Port 1 – Programming Port RS232 via RJ-11 connector –Port 2 – Communications Port RS232 via RJ-11, RS485 via RJ-12 Primary port for serial communications –Port 3 – 10-base T Ethernet TCP/IP support for networked systems

CSMSTR – Master, contd. Uses drivers to communicate with external devices –Unlike our competitors, our controller can act as a master to the PLC No need to purchase a communications card for the PLC You don’t need to figure out how to establish the communications! No awkward ladder logic protocol to store in PLC memory!

Configuration Crimson Software –Used for module configuration –Provides the means to map data from CSMSTR to other devices

Crimson Intuitive, graphical interface!

Crimson, contd. Configure modules via menus –Copy and paste modules to duplicate

Crimson, contd. Simple drag and drop comms setup!

Connection Connect to the port! It’s that easy!

Connection Variations Connect directly to an available PLC port –HMI connects to the other PLC port

Connection Variations, contd. Connect directly to an available PLC port –HMI connects to Port 1 of the Modular Controller*

Connection Variations, contd. Or connect both directly to the HMI

Connection Variations, contd. Connect to PC based system via serial port

Connection Variations, contd. Connect directly to Ethernet networks –PLC or PC based systems

Conclusion Only the Modular Controller makes integrating PID so easy! –Provides the convenience of panel mounted controllers Single loop reliability! Hot swappable module replacement! –Unprecedented ease of integration Built-in PLC drivers! Drag and drop data mapping! RS485, RS232, or Ethernet connectivity!

CSPID1 Models Six models to choose from –All Modules come with a Base
