Objective Students will compare their resting heart rate vs their working heart rate and explain the benefit of increasing your heart rate during exercise. Tell each other the objective ●Have students tell each other the objective ○As tell Bs then Bs tell As ●Teacher Randomly selects

Prior Knowledge Think about which activity made your heart beat faster- running a mile or volleyball

Concept Heart rate is the number of beats per minute, the times per minute your heart contracts. The two most common places to find heart rate on your body is at the carotid (neck) and radial (wrist) arteries. Resting heart rate is the number of beats in one minute when you are at complete rest. Example- Calming texting or playing on phone and/ or just waking up in the morning CFU- In your own words, what is resting heart rate? Students will compare their resting heart rate vs their working heart rate and explain the benefit of increasing your heart rate during exercise.

Concept Working heart rate is the number of beats in one minute at the completion of exercise. Example- jumping jacks CFU- Give me an example of when you can test a working heart rate. Explain why this is an example. Students will compare their resting heart rate vs their working heart rate and explain the benefit of increasing your heart rate during exercise.

Concept You want to increase your heart rate during exercise because: The heart is a muscle and it must be exercised to become stronger To strengthen the heart muscle so that your heart doesn’t have work as hard while you’re resting. (use visual of one hand pumping slowly, while other hand is pumping quickly to equal the same amount of blood pumped through the heart) This in turn can increase your lifespan and quality of life.

Relevance 1.If there was a Zombie Apocalypse, you need to be in shape to be able to run away and survive. 2.When you exercise and you feel better physically and mentally- it can improve your self- esteem and mood 3.Student choice CFU- Why is it important for you to raise your heart rate during exercise?

Skill/ Guided Practice Find your resting heart rate: 1.Locate the carotid and/or radial artery using your index and middle finger 2.Count the beats for six seconds (teacher will time), then multiply by ten or add 0 to end- record Complete Warm Up Find your working heart rate: 1.Locate the carotid and/or radial artery using your index and middle finger 2.Count the beats for six seconds (teacher will time), then multiply by ten or add 0 to end- record 3.Repeat steps for each activity then Compare your resting heart rate vs your working heart rate.

Independent practice Resting Heart- Working Heart rate- Benefit of increasing your heart rate during exercise-

Closure: Give three examples throughout your day that represent a resting heart rate? What can you alter in your everyday life to increase your working heart rate outside of Physical Education? (cite two) What are the benefits of increasing your working heart rate? Students will compare their resting heart rate vs their working heart rate and explain the benefit of increasing your heart rate during exercise.
