1 Chapter 1 Fitness and Wellness for ALL OBJECTIVES Define Physical Fitness, Health and Wellness. Describe some of the benefits of Fitness, Health and Wellness

2 Fitness for Life Healthy People 2010 Goals 1. Increase daily physical activity for all people. 2. Increase quality of life and fitness through Physical Activity. 3. Increase years of Healthy Life. 4. Reduce risk of chronic disease. 5. Reduce back pain. 6. Reduce incidence of overweight.

3 Physical Fitness The ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living.

4 The Surgeon General indicates that physical inactivity is a major risk factor for diseases. (these diseases will be discussed later) Increasing physical activity should be a major health goal for people of all ages!!!

5 Health and Wellness Health-The state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being. Wellness- The state of being that enables a person to reach his/her highest potential; includes-intellectual, social, emotional, physical and spiritual HEALTH.

6 Physical Activity Movement using the large muscles of the body. This includes sports, dance, walking, mowing lawn, climbing stairs.

8 Fitness Health and Wellness Benefits 1. Looking Good- 94% Men 99% Women would change their appearance. 2. Feeling Good- If you are active (physically fit) you can resist fatigue. 3. Enjoying Life- able to do things you enjoy. 4. Meeting Emergencies- offer assistance to those who might need it.

9 Checking (counting) Heart Rate RESTING HEART RATE Find pulse on wrist-(radial) or neck- (carotid). Use the index and middle finger. Count beats for 15 seconds then multiply that number by 4.
