Human Trafficking  “Just as slave masters in the 19 th century and earlier did, traffickers today use many of the same tools: fraud, threats and beatings, kidnapping, all aimed to do the same thing. This is the modern definition of slavery, but fitted into a new word: Human Trafficking” (Miller, Pg. 1).

Facts About Human Trafficking  There are two main types of Human Trafficking: Labor Trafficking and Sexual Trafficking (Hopkins, 1).  600, ,000 people are trafficked across national borders yearly (B.O.P.A., Pg. 1)  People are pressured into becoming trafficked using several different techniques:  Promising Of A Better Life  Promising Of Money/Land  Paying Off Debt  Fraud  Threats Or Use Of Force  Physical Force  The trade of human beings is the third largest illicit market worldwide (Hopkins, 1).  Human Trafficking generates $9.5 billion in annual revenue (FBI).

What Countries Are Affected? All countries are affected by human trafficking, however the greatest country affected is the UK (Home Office).  There were 4,000 victims of trafficking for prostitution in the UK during any one time (Home Office).  85% of women in UK brothels today are foreign born (Home Office).  Women are sold for as much as $50,000 in the UK (Home Office).  60% of these women are brought over by illegal means (Home Office).  There were only a total of 30 convictions made in (Home Office).

MTV’s Public Promotion Campaign Band Name: Radiohead Song Title: All I Need Album Title: In Rainbows MTV is using Radiohead's song, All I Need off the In Rainbows album, for a powerful global campaign against human trafficking (MTV EXIT). The song explains a day in the lives of two boys which unfold on a split screen. One boy lives in the first world and the other works in a third-world shoe factory. One enslaved boy is making the shoes the free boy wears (MTV EXIT) This song was played on MTV’s Exit (End Exploitation and Trafficking) campaign in 2003 and had the potential to reach over 560 million households (MTV EXIT).

Our Governments Efforts  In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, President Bush raised the issue of human trafficking and asked leaders around the world to work together to help end it (B.O.P.A.).  Congress passed a law where Americans who sexually prey on children abroad can be prosecuted and serve up to 30 years in prison. (B.O.P.A).  The U.S. is currently providing funding for the following aspects of human trafficking:  Rehabilitation and work training centers for victims  Special housing shelters for victims  Law enforcement training  Legal reform assistance  Information and awareness campaigns  Training for immigration officials  Medical personals  Combating sex tourism
