Software Orientation As you learn to format text, it is important to become familiar with the Font group of commands. The Font group, shown below, is displayed in the Home tab of the Ribbon. The Font group contains commands for changing the appearance of text. Change Fonts and Font Sizes In the Font group of the Home tab, click the Font drop-down arrow to display the Font menu. The menu appears, as shown at right. Change Fonts and Font Sizes Mini toolbar – can also use this Toolbar to change fonts. When you continue to change the font, you see a listing of recently used fonts. The default font for Word 2013 is Calibri and the point size is 11. One point = 1/72 of an inch. Change Fonts and Font Sizes Using the Increase Font Size on the Home Tab in the font group is one way to increase the font size. You can also use the mini tool bar, short cut menu (right clicking) or use the command CTRL + Shift + > or < keys. Monospaced fonts = proportional space. Example is Courier New where each letter is evenly spaced. Proportional font = horizontal spacing varies. Example is Times New Roman Sans Serif fonts = font that does not have a small line extensions on its characters. Calibri is an example. Apply Character Attributes In the Font command group, click the Bold button. Notice that the Bold button in the Font group is now selected. Short cut is CTRL + B Italic button The Italics button makes your text appear slanted up and the the right. Short cut is CTRL + I Underline button in the Font group underlines text. Apply Character Attributes In the Effects section, click the All Caps check box to insert a check mark. Strike through places a horizontal line at the mid point of the letters. Double strike through places a double horizontal line at the mid point of the letters. Font color menu…if you click the drop-down arrow on the Font Color menu, a menu of colors appears. The default color is Automatic = black. There are Theme color options and standard color options. Change Case Select the text you want to change and in the Font group, click the Change Case button. A menu of case options appears, as shown below. UPPERCASE. All letters are capitalized. lowercase. Highlight Text Click the drop-down arrow beside the Text Highlight Color button. A menu of colors appears, as shown below. If you cannot see the text, you might need to change the Font Color to a lighter color when you have a dark background color. Click the Text Highlight Color button again. Apply a Style Styles are located on the Home Tab in the Styles Group. Headings are typically used to call attention to headings or subheadings. If it has the Paragraph symbol Beside it, it is typically Used on Paragraphs. WordArt Located on the Insert tab in the Text group Word Art is a feature that creates Decorative effects with text. Import a PDF File and Apply Formatting A prompt appears stating, “Word will now convert your PDF to an editable document.” (see below). Click OK. By opening the PDF document, you have imported the document into Word. The Ribbon, is now active and you can begin applying formatting to the document. To close the window, point to the upper-left corner, and the document you are editing appears as a thumbnail.
