Towards the Development of National Child Protection Guidelines in Sport: The Trinidad & Tobago Experience Presented by Gabre-Jesu McTair OECS and UNICEF Safe Guarding Children in Sports Workshop Antigua & Barbuda 24 th -25 th February, 2014

The Importance of Safe Guarding Children in Sport “Every child should have the opportunity to take part in sport at all levels in a safe, secure and positive environment. Children have unique capabilities and strengths yet remain vulnerable to being influenced. In sport, where children and youth participation is predominant, child protection becomes everyone’s responsibility.” Source: Sport for Development International Working Group-Policy Brief

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child “States Parties undertake to ensure the child such protection and care as is necessary for his or her well being...”- Article 3.2

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child “States Parties shall take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect the child from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse…” Article 19.1

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child “States Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child… States Parties shall…encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity.” Articles 31.1 and 31.2
