Embedding Technology in Science Lisa Cary WKU Writing Project

Research tells us that our students are different than previous generations.

Today's students are immersed in technology. To become more effective educators we need to embed technology into our curriculum.

My project allowed students to use a variety of technology tools to learn and then show their understanding of the science content.

Students used iPods to create a concept map of vocabulary from the unit. Next they wrote an explanation of their concept map which included reasons why vocabulary was linked together.

Next students completed a web quest gathering information on Earthquakes and Tornadoes using the iPads and links from my website.

I Students viewed Youtube video's of Earthquakes and Tornadoes on the iPad to see exactly what each disaster looked like. They used this knowledge when preparing their PSA.

After gathering this content information students started planning their PSA.

Students used the Simplemind Xpress app as a mindmapping tool to plan their PSA.

Next students used the SonicPic app, a digital storytelling tool to create a rough draft of their PSA with pictures from the Internet and a recording of themselves explaining the disaster they chose.

Using the script that they wrote, students recorded their PSA with a flip cam.

The editing of the PSA was completed next with the final step the written reflection of the process and the knowledge gained from the experience.

The PSA's were shared in my science class and in the Language Arts class. We had planned to show them on our Friday morning school news program but our Technology teacher was unable to work it in.
