2016 BOND REFERENDUM Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

Why a bond referendum?  Our last large-scale bond referendum was in  Since then, our enrollment has grown and our buildings have aged.

Increase Capacity  Enrollment: 49,311  Enrollment: 53,919  2006 Mobile Classrooms: 358  2016 Mobile Classrooms: 486  Our goal is to move students from mobile classrooms to brick-and-mortar classrooms. +4,

Maintain Our Facilities  17 buildings more than 50 years old  Systems, such as heating, air conditioning, lighting and roofing, are outdated  Program space is outdated

Address Our Goals  Equip 1,840 classrooms with technology  Refresh technology in 1,860 classrooms  Update all media centers with furniture, 3D printer

A $350-Million Bond Package  Every classroom would be outfitted with a modern, equitable technology package.  Every media center would receive updates, including a 3D printer.  The district would add more space by building two new middle schools, space for pre-kindergarten students and additions at four schools.  The district would address aging buildings by building four replacement schools, extensively renovating four schools and performing maintenance work at 35 schools.  Safety improvements would be made throughout the district, along with traffic improvements at six schools.

In Our Area...  (This is where you insert projects touching your community, such as:)  Bolton Elementary would receive $150,000 to renovate its restrooms.  Brunson Elementary would receive $25.2 million to build a replacement school with additional capacity, including prekindergarten classrooms.

Technology  Equip classrooms with interactive display devices, tablet and document camera and sound enhancement

Technology  Update all media centers with modern equipment, including 3D printers

How Will It Affect My Taxes?  Based on county estimates, an average of 3.8 cents on the county tax rate.  If your home is worth $150,000, that equals $51.75 a year.

What About The Lottery?  Lottery proceeds are not enough to keep up with our needs.  Since the lottery began in 2006, we have given all proceeds to Forsyth County to help pay for the 2006 referendum.  Since 2006, that total is $44 million.

Register to Vote  Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8    Deadline to register to vote is Oct. 14  Early voting starts Oct. 20

When Would Construction Start?  If voters approve in November, we would receive money in February.  Construction could be stretched out up to 8 years.
